Phyllis Schlafly: Campus sex assault is on the rise because too many women go to college

The college-educated Schlafly thinks colleges should reduce the number of women they admit.

She thinks colleges should stop giving loans - "I went through college while working a full-time manual-labor job, and I don’t regret a minute of it; it was a great learning experience.” Boy, she is clueless, isn’t she?

Phyllis Schlafly is still alive?

SomeOldGuy – you beat me to it. I thought she was dead.
I can still ask though – is she even relevant?

Is this worth even dignifying with a response?

Why anyone listens to this woman or writes articles about her is amazing to me. Ugh.

The right would do so much better if it at least made some attempt to limit itself to arguments that made sense.

Schlafly seems to be saying that men are raping women because women are a majority on campus, so men think they don’t need consent. Huh? She also thinks women are a majority on campus because they are too flighty to figure out that they may not get a practical advantage by going to college, as compared to men who are good at analyzing things like that. Huh?, again.

On the other hand, I, too, was shocked to learn that Schlafly is still animate and capable of speech. She is surely long past any age when logic is a reasonable demand on her.

I think a lot of folks confuse Phyllis with Anita Bryant, who died back in … wait, what?? Anita’s still alive too? Who knew!

^^Anita Bryant is only 74??!

I remember vividly when, during the days that she was making a living travelling around the country telling other women to stay home and not work, she stated that the law required a man to buy his wife a mink coat.

The fact that anyone ever listened to that woman at all at any time has never ceased to amaze me.

I could think of reasons that women are raped on college campuses, but I would hardly include too many of them as a one. That is absurd.

I highly doubt that sexual assaults on campus have anything to do with the number of women on campus. That is a strange conclusion…and I don’t think that the right side of the political spectrum would agree with that conclusion.

I don’t remember the weird mink coat comment, but I do remember some odd comment that women didn’t need to establish credit in their own names…weird!

To suggest that this far-out odd-thinking individual represents the GOP or conservatives is just as nutty.

Why anyone gives this person the time of day is beyond me.

I hate hypocrites. They’re such slimeballs.

Romani, Phyllis Schlafly was quite vocal back in the day, basically trying to keep women in their traditional gender roles. Oh, I used to get so mad when I would hear her speak! I also was surprised she was still around … and even more surprised that anything she said was given any press at all.

Phyllis Schafly- someone still pays attention to her? Thats sad.

If people would be willing to set aside their biases against this woman and look only at her arguments, it’s not outlandish to think they might have some merit.

When the ratios are 50-50, women don’t have to compete for sexual attention as much. When students are working, they have less time to party and get in trouble.

^^^
If that’s the argument, then make it more clear. She’s an atty…she should be more articulate. Kids who are kept busy will have less free time to get into trouble…I think we all know that. But to somehow make it sound like less women should go to college is just wacky.

Read the column she wrote not the Salon piece which is really weirdly edited to make her sound as wacky as possible.

The American Council on Education reports that women have averaged 57 percent of enrollments since the year 2000. Women received nearly 60 percent of all college degrees conferred in 2010.

This has dramatically changed social relationships and interactions among students. Most girls and even some boys do not like this change, but nobody knows what to do about it, and few are even willing to discuss it.

One female student described the new relationship between the sexes like this: “Out of that 40 percent male population, there are maybe 20 percent we would consider dating, and out of those 20 percent, 10 have girlfriends, so all the girls are fighting over that other 10 percent.”

Anybody who understands human nature realizes that this situation changes behavior. Girls do not want to get left out in the cold, so they compete for men on men’s terms.

This results in more casual hook-ups that are dead-end encounters with no future and no real romantic relationships. A psychology professor described this bluntly: “When men have the social power, they create a man’s idea of relationships: more partners, more sex, no commitment.”

Ok…that is her position. I don’t think the current situation causes more “sexual assaults”. It may lead to the situation of “more partners, more sex, no commitment,” but that’s not the same as “sexual assaults.”

Right. Salon came up with that weird link on their own. It’s not in her column anywhere that I can find but they say she insinuated it somewhere in there. I despise rewrites. Her position is her position but it has nothing to do with sexual assaults at all and is not even all that crazy if you actually read what she says instead of what somebody else seems to have misread and expounded upon for clicks.
