Anyone know what the hours are for the Physics 101 Study Center? I’m planning on changing my schedule around and switching into it and I’m hoping to devote Tuesday Mornings to it since I will only have one class in the afternoon (I could probably go to an earlier section for that class though, but I am starting at a research lab and afternoon is best for it - dunno my hours yet though). I heard Physics 101 Study Center Hours aren’t that great, but I’d really like to know if anyone has them from a previous year - the only website for the class I found doesn’t have anything on it. Thanks!

I don’t quite remember…but I think in my day the center was open from 9am-10pm…or something like that.

So I guess unspecifically does it tend to be open morning, afternoon, and night? I just wish I knew on Tuesdays, since I’m planning on trying to make that my physics lab day, or at least the morning. I’m only asking now since I am taking to my lab supervisor about my schedule and I also need to add a section for behavior, so knowing this would really help, but if it’s open 9 am on every day that would just be awesome for me - I’ve just heard somewhere that it tends to not be as accessible as the autotutorial bio study center, and that was pretty accessible (except 5-7 pm grrrr)

I never had a hard time with accessibility…I think it’s closed from 4-6…but I honestly can’t remember specific hours

That seems fine then. I know it’s been asked a decent amount of times, but how did you find the class? Like it? I took 2 years in high school - Honors and AP Mechanics and E/M, so should I probably be fine? How many hours a week did you usually spend (in study center? out of study center?)? And how long do labs usually take? I’ve read that you need to keep a meticulous lab notebook. One reason I’m taking it is that in spite of the fact that 207 has calculus, which I like, about 6 hrs per week of class seems to really be absurd for me, especially since i learn best by teaching myself and tend to fall asleep during lectures anyway, and I don’t procrastinate. Anything about the class you hated or found too hard?

Sorry to bombard you with questions, but most threads seem to be comparisons of 207 and 101 rather than specifics on 101. Thanks!

I’ve always had difficulty with physics and I probably shouldn’t have taken 101. Most people who did well in HS physics have no problem with 101. Naturally…I spent a lot of time doing work…mostly out of the study center. I would go to the center for about 2 hours each day for help from the TAs. Labs took me about an hour. Yes…your notebook must be meticulous.

My biggest complaint about 101 was that the TAs had heavy accents and so I had hard time understanding them…made it difficult for me b/c my physics skills suck.

I remember it being open late morning-early afternoon and then after 7pm or so at night.

And you really need to be independent for Physics 101-102. Not only because it is autotutorial but because the TA’s are, for the most part, Asian grad students.

yeah, that doesn’t seem too bad then. i will say that i have been good at physics - i was actually originally going to major in physics and concentrate in biophysics until i realized that 1. i’d have no life, and 2. physics doesn’t conceptually interest me at all - i just like the challenge of the problems. i can be meticulous with labs, since i was with gen chem (waaaayyyy too meticulous, i spent waaaayyyy too much time on those lab reports, making sure every little detail was correct).

dewdrop: did you take physics 101 at the same time as orgo? that’s what i’m gonna do (previously was not going to, but after thinking about it - and i believe norcalguy said this, it’s just better so i can take mcats early, and plus i’ll have less stress from class junior/senior year with the exception of genetics)

Yes…I took phyics 101 with orgo and physiology…would have been fine if I didn’t have physiology in the mix

k, btw thinking about it, i don’t really need a TA anyway since my roommate is a physics major, and i can understand his english fine :D
