Physics at Northwestern

How is the physics program at Northwestern? Are there opportunities for undergrads to do research? Also, how is the chemistry program?

Thanks

and why only a Physics & Astronomy major rather than just a physics major?

Hmm, what do you mean?

It’s unusual for a school to have a major called physics and astronomy and not a major called physics. I want to know how the physics and astronomy major at NU would differ from a regular physics major at a different school.

The US News ranks NU’s physics 28th or something like that, if I remember correctly. So it’s supposed to be decent, though not one of the top ones. Like pretty much anywhere else, it is not one of the more popular majors so many current students may not know much about it because few people they know are in it.

The US News ranks NU’s chemistry #9; it’s supposed to be one of the best in the nation and quite a few chem majors had won prestigious scholarships-- good indication of strong undergrad research.
