Husband was saying yesterday how much he misses Bakers Square - we had gone there starting back when they were Poppin’ Fresh Pies. We may still have a couple of those pie tins! They had so many choices! Favorites were French Silk and Lemon Meringue. I also have very fond memories of a cherry pie we used to get at, I think, Crane’s Pie Pantry in Michigan.
There certainly are pies around here but not that big a selection of slices. Tarts are more prevalent perhaps. Julian Apple Pies are the most famous and tourists go to Julian just for a slice of pie.
My first grade teacher was from Pennsylvania. She often spoke about Shoo-fly pie. Eventually, she promised to make one (or however many were needed) for our class if every single person got 100% on a particular math test. Guess who kept the class from getting the shoo-fly pie?
I still remember the problem I missed: the sum of 1+2+3. And the teacher announced I was the reason we didn’t get the pie. My goodness have the times changed in education!
On THE Pi Day (3/14/15), we went to a local pie shop a few blocks from Cal Tech (because we figured they’d have the best pies on Pi Day, of course!). I had two youngish kids at that time, and we tried very hard to be seated and served in time to take our first bite at 9:26 am.
The map is supposively the pies most googled in that state for the month prior to today. Not the pie that represents that state or the favorite pie of that state.
These food map things are really never accurate or meant to be accurate - just for fun.
LOL - I love math (math team was my high school “sport”), and I love pie. I like cake too but would usually prefer pie over cake. (Cookies are a tie with pie).
My favorite is pecan pie. Also love cream pies. Fruit pies I prefer if homemade - my favorite was mom’s Dutch Apple Pie (crumb topping instead of top crust). I can eat just a slice of fruit pie, but hubby seems to need a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top.
Thanks for sharing this. The history of the chess-like pies during the Depression years is interesting… and makes sense for why anyone would ever try vinegar in a pie!
Wish I could ask my grandparents or parents if they used vinegar or other unusual ingredients in such a manner during those difficult times. Very interesting.
