Pick your name!

In the Jewish religion, it is traditional to name a baby for a deceased relative. One of my favorite Yiddish curses can be translated as “May a child soon be named after you”.

The family of one of my high school buddies had a tradition of naming the first son {Maternal grandfather’s name} {Paternal grandfather’s name} {Last name}. I thought it was a nice tradition, although I suppose it does make naming the first son a little formulaic. :)

Wash Dad -

Middle initial game: E=Elizabeth.

I confess, it’s my daughter’s middle name. In fact the majority of her friends’ middle names are either Elizabeth or Marie.

Another one here. It really is a nice name, though! It’s classic, it rolls of the tongue nicely, and has a lot of nickname potential. And it works well for those of us with short, one-syllable last names…

My oldest sister got the Elizabeth middle name. Then my parents went on an E kick, and the next 3 were Elaine (mine), Eileen, and Emily. But then they dropped back and punted with the last one - Ann.

I was always a little jealous of my oldest sister, though - thought she got the best one. It does seem pretty classic, and has definitely stood the test of time.

VERY cute!

When we were kids, we had an imaginary brother named Jamie. No one believed he was real, but he was the answer to all the “who broke the vase” questions. He took on a same kind of life: Jamie was a safe driver and eligible for all kinds of discounts, his services were badly needed by the military, and last I heard, Ed McMahon was still looking for him.

"But then they dropped back and punted with the last one - Ann. "

My middle name is Ann and as a child I thought everyone’s midle name was either Ann or Anthony, so I named all my dolls and pets ______ Ann or Anthony.

Conyat: I think Jamie is traveling Europe right now with Randall B---- Wallace.

I love names too. I debated when naming my girls between a beautiful middle name and a family name (we have lots of very Waspy grand ones to choose from that might wrongly, though perhaps beneficially, suggest great wealth). In the end I went with beauty and just today someone I called in a college office commented on how pretty my daughter’s name was. What I wish I’d done was give them both. So for MollieB (whose wedding plans I have enjoyed from afar) and others who will have children in the future, feel free to give your children four names. I’ve tried to talk my girls into adding a name belatedly but no luck so far.
Incidentally, my middle daughter’s first, middle and last name start with the same letter which seemed kind of funny at the time but she loves it. She claims that she will only add a husband’s name if it starts with that letter too.
And lastly, I was almost middle named Lynne too but apparently my dad had an old girlfriend with that name so my mom objected and I am Elaine instead. I never liked the name until Seinfeld.

When I was in high school, I had a lot of fun with my girlfriends talking about the twin boys I would eventually have: Ian, and Out.

Ironically, I wound up having twins! No Ian or out.

“Incidentally, my middle daughter’s first, middle and last name start with the same letter which seemed kind of funny at the time but she loves it. She claims that she will only add a husband’s name if it starts with that letter too.”
I had a friend in high school like this. She signed things Xcubed (can’t make the superscript in this window, but you get the idea)

dragonmom: I think that’s really cute! My son is a composer and hiinitials are all contained in the scale. I said he should use it as his signiture, like his favorite composer, Bach (ha ha!)

Pick a new name for myself? I dunno. How about Rock McCool? Bill Gates? Jack Armstrong - All American Boy?

W says if we ever get divorced she’s keeping my last name. Not because it’s an especially cool name or anything but because it moved her up to near the front of every alphabetic listing instead of back in pack where she spent her childhood and youth.

A few posts mention people giving their kids names that all begin with the same letter.

There was a “Yahoo” news blip today about an Arkansas family who just had their 17th child (no thanks!). I think their name is Duggar(?) All the kids were given “J” names, though they don’t say why.

Yeah, see, I’m switching the other way. I had to put my name on a mailbox in my lab yesterday, and I wrote my new name and put myself in alpha order, all the way at the end. It feels weird.

Also, if I’m not MollieB anymore, do I have to change my CC username? Perish the thought! (Actually, I think I am going to migrate my maiden name to my middle name at least professionally, thus doing away with the perennial Ann-vs-Anne dilemma.)

Every once in a while, since we’ve lived in our house (about 17 years), we get mail addressed to:

Prince Lewis
[our street address], rear

So, we know he lives in the backyard somewhere, but we’ve never found him. But we feel like Prince Lewis is part of the family.

garland,
Whose rear is prince Lewis hanging out in ? :D

My husband has a distant relative named Joseph Josephs. And yes, his son is Joe Josephs, Jr. His mother has twin cousins, Doris and Delores. And again I ask, WHY?

My aunt and uncle are a cute-name couple, but by marriage. They’re Horace and Doris. (Since they live in the south it sounds like Horse and Dorse).

Lafalum84: Here are some more for you, but since they’re by marriage at least it’s nobody’s fault. When I was in h.s. my best friend and I made fun of her sister Nan who married Stan. Her name was Lynn and she grew up tp marry Wynn. I kid you not.

I know a woman named Karen who changed her name to her husband’s Caran. They were pronounced exactly the same way.

Oh, but I did know a David Davis and William Williams.
