Picking a Scholars Program

Hi. I got accepted into Kinesiology and Scholars. When I called the Scholars Office to ask which program would best fit me, the man said that Global Public Health or Public Leadership would best fit my major, but he said I should choose a program unlike my major to get experiences in different areas.

Any opinions on this?

Should I choose something that fits my major or my other interests?

It’s really up to you; a lot of people pick something that correlates with their majors (e.g. bio majors in Life Sciences), but other people do things that are more tangentially related (e.g. government majors in Environment, Technology, and Economy), and others do something completely unrelated (e.g. engineering majors in Arts).

Read through the different program descriptions. Are there any that stand out to you in particular? Are there any activities/hobbies/interests you have that might fit with any of the programs?

I’ve narrowed it down to 4 choices.

Global Public Health goes with my major.

Business… I want to minor in some type of Business thing, but I know thats competitive

Public Leadership seems interesting but very general

and International Studies since I like Model United Nations, but that doesn’t relate to anything i’d study, its just interesting.

If the main reason you’re interested in IS is for Model UN, you could also satisfy that interest by joining Model UN at UM ([Model United Nations | University of Maryland](http://www.studentorg.umd.edu/modelun/)).

BSE might be good to consider if you want to do something with business, which wouldn’t necessarily go directly with your major.

GPH would be good if you are pretty sure you’d like to pursue kinesiology/health in the future.

As an incoming elementary education major, the Advocates for Children program would have been perfect. Unfortunately they are no longer offering that Scholars program for Fall 2011 freshman. Do any of the other programs come remotely close? Thanks!!

There really aren’t any other children-focused programs. You will, however, get a lot of that with the elementary ed major. Do you have any other particular interests that don’t directly correlate with your major?
