ok so my parents have suggested that I should pick at least 10 classes that I would like to register for before I go to SPOP 8/10. I have printed out the 09-10 catalog but how accurate is it? are the classes going to be the same this year? I did notice that the FIP program classes are different which disappointed me a bit, since last year there were 5 options and now this year there are only 3. so is it wise for me to choose classes from before? and what classes would you recommend? im an EE major and i have waived math 2a and one humanities course by AP scores and the GE language requirement with 3 years of french in high school.

also my parents suggested that i over enroll myself so that if I have a class I hate I can just drop it. i only want to take the minimum amount for a full time student i believe that’s three classes? or is it four?

There should only be minor differences between 09-10 and 10-11… So if using that catalogue is my only option, I would go ahead with it.

Minimum for a full-time is 12 units, which is 3 four-unit classes. Freshmen typically take only 12 units for first fall quarter, but remember; you will want to average 45 units/year if you want to graduate on time, but thats without any AP/incoming credit.

I advise you to just take 16 or 20 units in the beginning, and drop if its too hard, just as your parents advised for you to do.

For classes, I don’t know too much about engineering majors, but there is someone on this forum who will answer your questions about that.

Pull up the thread about when classes are offered – there are links to both the current catalogue, which is available online, as well as the zot scheduler. Using the scheduler will show you when there are time conflicts for the classes you’re thinking about. 12 units is the minimum for a full time student, and most classes are 4 units. As far as over enrollment, not a bad idea, but unless your an honors student, there may be a cap (perhaps 18) for the number of units you’ll be allowed to register for without permission.

i think i will keep looking for classes that i might want to take so that i will have different options in case of a conflict and i will probably over enroll myself.

max is 20 units. but… don’t do 20 units your first quarter. i only did 13 and it was slightly difficult to adjust, but maybe that’s me. i would recommend 16 units and then dropping one class later if you need to. i think 20 units would be way too much too soon, unless you don’t care about having fun. 16 units is the average amount that people take i think.
and i don’t think zotscheduler works too well anymore? some of the class listings to me don’t line up which messes it up when trying to add a class… idk i just use [Ant Planner](http://antplanner.appspot.com/) now.
but don’t forget to check the availability of the classes in websoc/antplanner to see if you’re even going to be able to enroll in the classes you want or if you’ll have to waitlist.

@moey
i definitely do not want to do the max units i just wanted to see if it was wise to do an extra class as you’re saying 16 units instead of 12. and thanks for the ant planner link. i like how it lays out the classes in a schedule that’s very helpful. but you have to use the zot scheduler to register for classes right? right now it’s not letting me register even if i wanted to it’s saying i have to wait until the 25th of august. i guess they don’t want freshman registering without going to orientation?

you use webreg to register for classes, and websoc is the official link to the class schedule. zotscheduler is just some program that was created to help schedule classes, which was always recommended to me when i was a freshman, i’m not sure if that’s what they recommend now, since i thought it’s a little messed up still.
but yeah, it won’t let you register until day of SPOP and even a certain time. after fall quarter, registration will be a certain date and time still too. (e.g. as exact as 6:15PM).

that makes more sense. but say i try and figure out my own schedule by using websoc would that be accurate? are the times that show up on there correct?

if you haven’t gone to spop, websoc is a good resource to use to plan out your schedule. it’s pretty damn accurate. new only means that the course slot is only offered to incoming freshmen.

websoc is pretty accurate… but just be aware that some of the classes that you’ve planned to include in your schedule may already be filled by the time you attend SPOP. ): You’ll have time go over websoc again while you’re signing up for classes at SPOP. You should probably plan out a bunch of different schedules/classes you’d like to take in case some become filled beforehand.

websoc is definitely accurate, since it’s provided by UCI. class times or rooms may change after you enroll in them, but in your studylist/webreg it will mark that a class time or room has changed (i don’t think it tells you which, but most of the time it’s just a room change)

as for figuring out your schedule in case a class is full, the best time is probably in between the spop date that yours begins and the previous one ends. http://www.dos.uci.edu/orientation/
you’re probably going to hate the NewOnly restriction post-freshman year, but now it’s definitely towards your advantage. i’m not sure but it might mean it’s open to transfers too, since there’s even upperdivision classes with that restriction
oh, but don’t be afraid to waitlist classes if you need to. especially over the summer it seems like people actually can get into waitlisted classes. i’ve had friends who waitlist and may have been 20th or so but still get in. buut, it depends on the class size and what not. i’m sure you can try to judge for yourself the likelihood of getting in. i’m not too good with telling you the chances since i haven’t had much waitlist experience (priority enrollment).

yes there’s SPOP 8/5 to 8/6 and then mine starts 8/10 so I will check on the 7th if the schedule I have planned is still available and then I will stick to that.

@thunderwolf333 - When you make different schedules, make sure to write down the code numbers for the classes! Because when you register/enroll for classes, they’ll tell you to copy & paste the code into the box, but it’ll be easier if you have it right there in front of you, so you can just type it in. That’s what I did; it only took me 10 minutes to enroll in classes! Everyone else was taking awhile to look up classes, figure how the schedule would look like & looking for the codes.

You’ll be prepared compared to others, so I think you’ll be fine. Just check if the classes are full before your SPOP & right before you enter the code!

thanks for the tip for writing down the class codes i would have forgotten to do that!
and omg the writing class is full/wait listed i guess i can’t take writing this quarter. ill have to find another class. i regret signing up for SPOP late but i wasn’t aware that registration had already started! i was thinking i would receive an email to my main email but instead it was sent to my school email which i neglected to check since i remember reading something about how all the important emails would be sent to both email addresses. i guess not… is there anyway to forward my email from uci to my main email which is gmail? that would help a lot. a little off subject but if anyone knows if this is possible?

i know this might be an obvious question but i just want to make sure…
each quarter you pick which class and TEACHER you want right?

Because certain teachers were full, will I have a chance to get them winter/spring quarter? Or do the previous students who had certain teachers get priority?
