We house sit during the summer for friends of ours who move North to escape the heat and humidity. Someone in the neighborhood had a lot of pineapples growing in their yard. This year, several more neighbors have started growing the plants. I have to ask our friends, just what kind of neighbors are they??? heheheheh.
DS selected Old Navy shorts with an small overall embroidered pineapple pattern earlier this summer as part of his going to college new clothes. (He wore uniforms in school.) I don’t know if there was a message in his choice.
My little brother has a pineapple-shaped cell phone charger and last week when we went to a concert, it got us pulled aside at the security bag check. The guard was waving it around like a grenade, demanding to know what it was. The ironic thing is that she didn’t even glance at all his insulin needles, which is what usually gets us scrutinized.
@toledo I think you are on to something! For me, it is not so much about the pineapple as it is about the choice to bring such big decor that doesn’t also serve a purpose. With dorm space as limited as it is, my D’s decor was pretty much limited to that which she could put on the walls to get rid of the cinder block/jail cell feeling. All of her other stuff served some sort of purpose. Even my daughter remarked on her roommate’s pineapple saying - “maybe it opens and she can keep stuff in there.”
There is a store near my house that sells shaved ice (excellent snowcones with homemade syrups) that has decorated mini wooden pineapples hanging in its picture windows. The name of the store is House of Pure Aloha, HOPA.
Yes, but I’m sure many would be surprised it’s a sign for swingers. Didn’t know swinging was still popular until H and I were propositioned by a couple we had met one night when we were at a medical conference. We laughed it off but it was a weird evening and provided some comic relief to a friend I told about it.
Must be the new decor trend (like owls a couple of years ago). D and I were in gift store the other day and there was a fairly large selection of pineapple items. Of course if you are Psych series fan, they featured pineapples in every episode and are having a Christmas TV special.
A Sour Patch Kids ad https://www.ispot.tv/ad/wLA4/sour-patch-kids-tropical-pineapple
that followed directly on the heels of a promo for the show Psych pointing out that there’s a pineapple in almost every episode.
Today at Victoria’s Secret I saw gift cards in the shape of a pineapple.
Until the thread about the outrageous dorm room began, I was in the pineapple camp. I grow them, I have a pineapple mat by front door (from BB&B), and I recently bought a white shirt with silver pineapples on it from BR. Last year, they had a large, embroidered pineapple on a shirt.
Welcome to my countertop. I have a pineapple cookie jar and on top is a pineapple key chain with pop out eyeballs when you squeeze it. Both bought several years ago.
Speaking of pineapples, my favorite pizza is canadian bacon and fresh pineapple with extra cheese.
Wow, never realized there are such strong attachments to pineapples–they’re very common here. Have learned that some folks are allergic and end up with sores in the mouth from eating even small quantities of them. Ouch! My sister is one of those and thought it happened to everyone, so just recently realized it is NOT something everyone suffers from.
I knew of pineapples as a symbol of hospitality from visiting Colonial Williamsburg as a child. The information from their web site says that Sir Christopher Wren began using pineapples as finials on churches sometime around 1681. My knowledge of history is not strong enough to say whether Sir Christopher Wren was a swinger or not, but I am somewhat inclined to doubt it.
I just saw one of our attorneys walk by… in a pineapple aloha shirt and really terrible looking jeans. Some guys take “casual dress Fridays” very seriously. B-)
