Thank you! And agreed for the pre-health/science majors no contest. Apart from Communication/Journalism for SU which other areas are strong there? Admittedly, we have not done adequate research because we expected it to be off the table pricewise. Also, the city environment and surrounding museums, arts, restaurants very important in D25’s decision so that factors substantially for her. How does your son like CMU? Academically not on our radar but I do like the fact that Pitt students can cross-register for a course or 2 at CMU if not offered a Pitt.
Love this! Thank you for sharing. Excited to send to my daughter
For SU, definitely comms/Newhouse and I think some of their programs in Visual & Performing Arts (and advertising) are strong as well as some sports/health adjacent programs in the Falk school. My son loves CMU. It is very different than the experience I had in undergrad at SU in the 90s. The whole social life is more focused around academic/intellectual pursuits and the work load is no joke. He has learned a ton and is involved in some very interesting and cutting edge research. And he has still found time to make great friends, join clubs, and explore Pittsburgh a bit. Even this NYC born and bred kid thinks Pittsburgh is cool. Carnegie museums right there practically on campus, quick trip downtown for sports, concerts, etc. Good restaurants all over, decent thrifting scene, cool and quirky neighborhoods. He’s now living off campus in Shadyside and loves the area. And he’s running the Pittsburgh marathon in May! On cross registering: my son wanted to continue his study of Greek / Latin which he loved in high school and CMU doesn’t offer the classics. He was allowed to register at Pitt but with his labs, the scheduling never worked out. Hoping he still might be able to make it happen next year.
In addition to Communications/Journalism, Architecture and Engineering are both very good at Syracuse. Their Sport Management program may be one of the best in the country. In general, the Business School has an extensive list of majors, many of which can’t typically be found at many other colleges.
And social science (Maxwell) is a home run. But is strong at Pitt as well.
