The University of Pittsburgh said today it has named an interim dean of its honors college.

Pitt economics Professor Steven Husted will assume those duties Aug. 1. His temporary appointment was necessitated by the April 7 death of G. Alec Stewart, 69, founder of the university honors college, following a long illness.

The university is mounting a search for a permanent successor to Dr. Stewart.

According to Pitt, Dr. Husted was associate dean for Graduate Studies and Research in the School of Arts and Sciences between 1999 and 2005. He is part of an advisory panel to the honors college and has supervised its bachelor's students in philosophy and the Brackenridge Fellowship program. He also has taught within the college.
