Pittsburgh or Winston-Salem?

I am a rising senior. I plan to major in economics and political science. On my college list is University of Pittsburgh and Wake Forest University. However, I was wondering which has better job prospects for college graduates. Pittsburgh is large, but Winston-Salem is next to Raleigh.

Pittsburgh. Also, you get a free bus pass with University of Pittsburgh, so you can get around much easier and much more cheaply.

WS is pretty far from Raleigh.

definitely Pittsburgh.

You don’t necessarily have to be employed in the area of the college you graduated from. Both schools are visible on the national scale. Consider other factors, because Wake Forest and Pitt are very different schools.

Winston-Salem isn’t THAT far from Raleigh…that being said, you also have Greensboro, Durham, Charlotte in North Carolina for your job search…Not many people realize this, but Greensboro is larger in population than Raleigh is, so you’ll probably have some prospects there if you choose Wake, as well as in Charlotte.

Winston is almost two hours from Raleigh… I don’t know much about Pittsburg but I go to school in Winston and know there’s not much to do there. For the distance, Raleigh or even High Point and Greensboro are not much more interesting… Wake’s a good school but I wonder whether’s it’s worth the high tuition and mediocre location. It just depends on what you’re looking for in a college! 8)

I lived in Greensboro in my mid 20’s and loved it! Not much to do? You’ve got the mountians 2 hours to the west, the beach 3-4 hours to the east. Charlotte, Greensboro, WS, Raleigh, & Durham within two hours, 4 ACC schools with their sporting events within 2 hours of each other. The state zoo in Ashboro (45 mins -1 hour from WS)…good resturants, etc.

^ However, that all requires a car. I live in a mid-sized city in NC with beach access, etc, but even though there’s public transportation it’s not accessible either. No one uses the buses, and there’s no metro here (or in the state as far as I’ve seen, maybe in Raleigh). My sister studies in Greensboro, and she also said that social life there is close to none. No offense csdad, but that might’ve also been a while ago ^_^;;;

I’d go with Pittsburgh. Great school, with lots to do in the city. Also, I’ve found that Wake Forest isn’t that well known outside of NC, especially by the current hiring managers. My mother’s a lawyer, and one day she asked me “What’s that one school out in the east of the state that all the lawyers at my company seem to go to when they can’t get in anywhere else?” Nuff said.

Wake isnt well known outside of NC? Haaahaaa. More than half the students come from the Northeast. Good grief.

Its a fabulous school, gorgeous southern georgian architecture, magnolia trees galore. Top flight ACC athletic school.

Winston is lovely. Its not New York but they have museums, galaries, opera, symphony, fabulous restaurants, nightclubs, lovely neighborhoods and nice people. Many kids who come to Wake STAY in the community. A vigorous and well respected alumni association. They have tremendous placement to grad schools and professional schools. Its 2 hours from Raleigh and 90 minutes to Chapel Hill and Durham. 90 minutes to Charlotte. 2 hours to the mountains (which are awesome!). Carolina beaches are the envy of the East Coast.

DC is 6 hours away. Atlanta 5 hours.

Your mother may be a lawyer but her sarcasm speaks very poorly of her judgement. Wake is highly competitive. Wake Law is highly respected and draws from all over the country with respected alumni in government, federal bench, state supreme court, business and large law firms.

I laugh at kids (and apparently) some parents who don’t know what they are talking about and then make silly and snide remarks. Hogwash.

Anyone who bashes a school is immediately suspect. Any school.

Pay no attention to the people here who are trash talking. Pitt is a fine school and a good city that is transforming itself from a once steel mill town. Visit both and make your decision.

Good luck.

LOL at anybody saying Wake isn’t well known. Both schools are amazing.

Wake is more prestigious, although I would imagine that Pitt is better for a job

Raleigh is almost twice Greensboro’s size-

Greensboro population- 224,000

Raleigh population- 406,000

Well, I personally never heard of Wake before I moved to NC. I lived closer out west for reference btw, so that may be it.

And no, my mom wasn’t being sarcastic. Might I add that her comment was based on the graduated students’ lack of ability in the workplace, with multiple graduates as references.

And like I mentioned before, you guys are all making references to cities that you would need to drive to in order to get to. Unless the OP plans on driving hours to get anywhere, it doesn’t seem like she’d have anything to do or any places to get internships or jobs.

I’d also discourage the OP based upon the area she wants. Being close to Raleigh is great if you’re planning on going into pharmaceuticals, but I’m unsure as if that would help an econ major.

wake forest has a pretty big sports, mostly basketball, program so a lot of people do know of it.

And no, my mom wasn’t being sarcastic. Might I add that her comment was based on the graduated students’ lack of ability in the workplace, with multiple graduates as references.=metalikka

If you think that because YOU never heard of Wake before moving to North Carolina (why did you move there?), means that Wake is not well known, well that is just a case of someone extrapolating their own lack of knowledge onto millions of others. Sorry. Doesnt fly here.

I know a lot of people in LA and they all know about Wake and respect it.

As for your mother supposedly having experience with Wake students not performing well on the job, that is just simply not the case and I challenge that assertion to the utmost. In particular, Wake Law students are well regarded, get the jobs and keep the jobs. Make partner, etc. Wake’s alumni association is strong and they are affluent. You don’t have affluent alumni if they are failures in life. So your statement (and your mother’s assertion) are absurd on their face and really makes me challenge your mother’s credentials and work performance.

Sorry, but that is how I see it.

Is there some Wake alumni who underperformed out there? Or someone who took the wrong career path? Certainly. Happens everywhere. I had a VERY bad experience with a Stanford employee once. Does that make me judge Stanford? Not really. Just a square peg in a round hole…wrong career path, that is all. Nota bad person.

■■■■■■ who come on here with negative karma and trash schools they have not attended (or sometimes attended and washed out/transferred out) really don’t gain credibility.

No college is perfect and certainly not perfect for everybody. But picking on Wake Forest is really silly. There is very strong competitive spirit in the ACC between schools…and some bashing by Dukies and UNC Chapel Hill kids…but that is just normal sneering at the competition…and Wake Forest kids likely sneer back at them too. And we ALL sneer at Clemson. (sorry Pierre, just had to get that in there for a good laugh!) Just kidding.

Pitt is a fine school and Pittsburgh is a great city. But that doesnt mean they have the edge on getting jobs either. LOTS of Wake students go to Charlotte in IBanking, or New York, or Atlanta, or LA, Chicago. Local companies always favor local talent, but that is true everywhere. Its called networking and “contacts.”

I just get the hair raised up on the back of my neck when people trash schools they know nothing about or make outrageous statements that likely have no basis in reality, or even if true in one or two instances, doesnt represent the school at large.

The OP should visit both schools and make a decision which is best for THEM and their criteria for “fit.”

Finally suggesting that Raleigh is bad for econ majors is ludicrous on its face. Raleigh is home to the RTP which is both a pharma and a high tech center which is home to some of the most famous Fortune 500 companies in the world. Raleigh metro is over 1 million people. Greater Greensboro-High Point-Winston Salem is over 1 million people. Charlotte metro is over 1 million people (not city limits, but MTSA). The jobs are there for econ majors, english majors, accounting majors, finance, on and on and on. Banks, manufacturing, research, sales, etc.

Metallica you really need to think before you make silly comments. Your negative karma is showing.

Been to WF three times and never could find the “lovely” section of town. :)

Well compared to a lot of what I see in LA when I am there, it is lovely. But beauty is in the eyes of the beholder, I suppose. Winston Salem has nice neighborhoods, its very family friendly and no smog or heavy traffic. Ditto Greensboro. Raleigh and Charlotte have traffic issues, but nothing like the Bay Area of California and LA. Been to Wake three times? For what? And where did you go to school bayou?

I am not a salesman for Wake or the state of NC. Nor a trash talker of other regions or cities or schools. All I know is NC is growing rapidly and a lot of that growth comes from people who go to school here (Davidson, Duke, NCState, UNC, Elon, Wake, UNCW, ECU, Appalachian) and come from other states and stay there for the quality of life and job opportunities. The real estate market in NC is a lot more stable than the mess in California, I might add.

Your post #18 does a good bit of bashing of California, does it not? :)

Not sure that is relevant, nor have I ever posted.

Most sensible post in the thread. If anyone bothers to look at the career data instead of guessing, you’ll see that Wake grads are employed in NYC, Vienna, Hong Kong, Geneva, Tokyo, Madrid, San Francisco, Miami, London, Atlanta, and quite a few more far-flung places.

Most of the people I know at Wake love it. It’s a great school and very underrated on CC.
