PittStart question

I will be a freshman engineering major. I think I will do well on AP Calc AB so then i can place out of 1st semester calc. but if my pittstart is scheduled BEFORE i get my AP grades back, then how can i ensure that i will be able to take the next calc course 1st semester (assuming i get a 4 or 5 on the AP)

You will probably be able to register for the second semester at PittStart, and there will be an advisor who registers you whom you can discuss the timing of scores. If for some reason your scores are not high enough, the first two weeks of the semester are a drop/add period.

To my knowledge (at least in A&S; not sure about engineering), they let you register for classes based upon your expected AP grades–if there’s a discrepancy between your projected/actual exams scores, the situation will be handled accordingly. Good luck!

My son registered for classes based on his expected AP grades. His advisor said they would adjust if necessary.

ok thanks everyone

Hi mictedgin,
I’m a peer advisor with the Arts and Sciences Advising Center. What your advisor will most likely tell you to do is go ahead and register for the next calc course, Math 0230, as long as you feel confident with your AP test. If your scores come back and they are not as high as you had hoped, you can always drop the class and try to add calc one, which is Math 0220. Those are the two required first-year math courses for an engineering student.
However, make sure you talk to an advisor in the engineering department, which you will do at your pittstart. Here is their advising website: [Advisors: Freshman Engineering: School of Engineering: University of Pittsburgh](http://www.engr.pitt.edu/freshman/advising/advisors.html)
