<p>"Ben Kotopka loves math and science, the beautiful logic of it all, how one equation relates to another, how it either works or it doesn’t.</p>

<p>Very little gray area.</p>

<p>Except here’s the thing, the Pius X High School senior also has a passion for literature, for reading and writing and the humanities, which are colored by every shade of gray.</p>

<p>So don’t try to pigeonhole this 18-year-old scholar, because the oldest of seven children is also a cross-country runner, a newspaper editor, an actor and a singer.</p>

<p>That variety may be part of what led a commission appointed by the president to select Kotopka as one of two Presidential Scholars from Nebraska. . . . (continued)</p>
