Place for Confessions in a College Application Essay

Okay, maybe confessions isn’t the right word.

But I like CommonApp prompt 1. I am an extremely reflective person. I think about everything. As some may be able to attest to, it is often hard to share some of these thoughts with other people. I have thoughts and experiences that are central to my identity, yet, because of the ease with which they can feed misperceptions of me, I have chosen not to share them with even my closest of friends. In other words, I believe that people close to you (friends and family) form their relationship with you around a perception of you that must remain fairly constant in order for the relationship to continue. So, some things that may be a part of your identity might need to be shielded from those that already know you in order to maintain a stable relationship with that person.

Now to my question. The personal statement on college applications is the one opportunity for the applicant to express oneself and his/her identity in all of its multifaceted glory.

My question is: is it okay to include things in your essay that you might not be willing to share with other people for the purposes of giving a more complete picture of yourself?

I have come to the preliminary conclusion that it is. I just need to know if I am dead wrong before I finalize my essay.
