Placed onto academic probation

I was a former UT austin student who ended up doing poorly my first 2 years (My cumulative GPA ended up being a 1.69 which ended me in academic probation. My parents decided that I had to go to a communty college. I’m now attending a local community college and I was wondering if there’s any advice on how I should prepare for transfer to a different 4-year university. I understand that my grade marks have to be exceptional i.e 4.0, however since my grades will carry with me from UT I was looking at that as a problematic concern. I want to transfer to the University of Houston-main campus and apply to their engineering program, however they require a 3.0 gpa for all course work. I’ve taken most of my classes like Calculus and Engineering Physics I and ended up with a C, however the classes the community college has to offer can’t really benefit me since I’ve completed most of my core prereqs. The only core classes that I need to take are English, Government, and Engineering/University Physics 2. So I’m in a conflict on how long I should attend a community college. Should it be a 1,2,3, or (4 semester and obtain an associate degree). I’m really in a bad situation and I need help.

Thanks

You need to repeat the core Engineering courses in which you obtained poor grades. Courses with grades below a “C” do not usually transfer and your GPA indicates that you have a number of those. By repeating the Calculus and Physics classes that you did poorly in (plus any pre-engineering courses that are available), you will show that you can handle the material and you will improve your core engineering GPA making admission a better bet. You should stay at least one full year to repeat those courses and then see if a second year is recommended. It is possible that UH will not accept more than a certain amount of transfer credit so staying too long might not be very helpful. Do you need to get an AA? Not necessarily since you plan to transfer to a 4-year school.

Thank you for the reply xraymancs. The community college does not offer classes like differential equations, discrete mathematics which I have failed. My fundamental Calculus classes I made a C and Engineering Physics I’ve also made a C. I do plan on Taking Engineering/University Physics 2 this semester. I was thinking that instead of taking Government and English this semester that I should take Biology I and Chemistry I (I took chemistry at UT and failed) to make my technical gpa look competitive and take classes like English and Governent during some other period i.e winter or summer. Do you have a personal email that I can explain further in detail.

Thanks
