Placement Tests for August 2010?

As an international student, I’ll attend the fall orientation which starts around 10th August. I’m planning to take Chinese class, and I found out that I need to take the placement test first. When will the test took place? How long will the result be given? Will it be in time before Class registration is open (19th Aug)?

Thank you very much =D

Fall orientation is August 18-19 this year:

Err… I’m not asking about fall orientation. I’m asking about any CHINESE Placement Test that I can attend.

I know you weren’t asking; I was correcting your dates. And you should be able to schedule your placement during your Orientation: (See Below. You will need to schedule the test with the specific language department)

[Required Tests](http://www.utexas.edu/academic/mec/cbe/required.html)

FOREIGN LANGUAGE PLACEMENT

Students with prior knowledge of American Sign Language, Chinese, French, German, Japanese, Korean, Polish, Vietnamese, Spanish, Russian, however acquired, must take a placement test before enrolling for the first time in a UT Austin course in that language.

Exceptions: (a) Students transferring college credit in most foreign languages are not required, but are strongly encouraged, to take a placement test before enrolling in a UT Austin course in the language for which they have transfer credit; (b) If a student has eligible scores on the AP or IB exams, he or she may not be required to take the placement test. However, if a student with no college credit in Spanish would like to enroll in a higher-level course, he or she must take the placement examination before enrolling in any Spanish course.

College Board Advanced Placement (AP) Examinations and The International Baccalaureate (IB) Examinations in foreign languages are used by UT Austin for placement and credit.

Placement tests are offered regularly in American Sign Language, Chinese, French, German, Hindi, Japanese, Korean, Latin, Polish, Russian,Vietnamese, and Spanish. Tests in foreign languages other than these are scheduled on an individual basis; students who need to take placement tests in such languages should make arrangements directly with the appropriate foreign language departments.

look at the last paragraph:

"Placement tests are offered regularly in American Sign Language, Chinese…

Tests in foreign languages other than these are scheduled on an individual basis; students who need to take placement tests in such languages should make arrangements directly with the appropriate foreign language departments."

chinese is scheduled in a regular basis, or a fixed date, and I want to know the date. only those not mentioned in the list require individual request to the department.

[Test Periods and Test Descriptions](http://www.utexas.edu/academic/mec/cbe/testperiod.html)

BTW, I found this pretty easily using the BeALonghorn link to UT testing information. If you need more specifics than that:

http://www.utexas.edu/academic/mec/cbe/chinese.html</a></p>

Deepest apologies for my error above. I skimmed the paragraph and knew that my son will have to schedule his testing directly with the department. I hope it wasn’t too much of a problem for you.

Just a thought: If you ask for people to help you, the edgy attitude will not encourage enthusiastic response.

lol hes just being persistent so that his question can fully be answered

I guess he could have easily answered his own question if he had looked on the website for a minute. Would have been faster than posting here.

actually I have read that webpage before, and I know that the test’s gonna be some days before class registration opens. My concern is that since there’s no fixed date on the website, I wonder if there’s sufficient time for the test result to come out before class registration begins at aug.

It’s my fault for not making this clearer since the start, and I apologize deeply. Really sorry!

My assumption is that testing administered during orientation sessions will be scored ASAP so that students can register for the appropriate session. Wouldn’t that make sense? Otherwise, what would be the point? Any student coming to summer or fall orientation will be registering for classes at that session, therefore will need their testing results at that session. If this is faulty reasoning, someone please correct me.

@eclipze: Usually systems in the US are set up to work properly and in accordance with demonstrated need. There are exceptions, of course, but in this case, testing is administered specifically for immediate results so that students can be placed appropriately. I would never say that it is a perfect system, but it is designed to fill the need.

im pretty sure you will more than likely get the score the same day

Thanks! Relieved to hear that. Sorry for making all the trouble =)

The one thing I will point out is that it looks like they do not test for Chinese at Summer Orientation, but only in late August. It may be that due to this policy, all of the freshman taking the required Chinese placement test will be placed in their appropriate classes after that test is administered. It looks like this is true for many of the other “regularly scheduled” languages, some testing being more regular than others. Take a look at the testing chart in the above link if you need more info.
