Placement tests

Why do we have to take this nonsense?

Uhh… to see where you place?

Why can’t they just use standardized test scores to tell where you place?

Because maybe you didn’t actually ‘learn’ the stuff, just crammed like hell for the standardized scores haha :P

I didn’t study for the SAT. Well, I SORT OF did. I took a prep course, but I didn’t do any independent studying.

Who studies for the SAT’s? I didn’t even take a prep. course.

Prep courses are gay. All the people who took them said that all they do is tell you to do practice tests in your book for homework. What a waste of time.

how would the SAT tell where to place you in a chemistry or calculus or french course? honestly, think about it… plus it’s MORE standardized–it’s one test given to the entire group of students that want to take the course instead of looking at a range of scores (which they can’t even see real results from) from a bunch of different tests.

Yeah.
I agree with riki, although many schools DO use SAT/ACT scores to determine placement, but they may set the standards for bypassing certain subjects a bit above the high end of avg (i.e., a 26 math to bypass math entirely when an average score is more like 22-24).

Oh I thought you guys were talking about APs/IBs when you referred to the ‘standardized tests’

Not everyone takes AP/IB/SAT2s. That’s why :p

yay! I just found out I only have to take math placement test now, and not the writing.

I have to take like every placement test. I am not happy.

I hate math :(

Just a tip for everyone: DO NOT GUESS on these tests

I had a friend in undergrad who guessed on his math placement test and it placed him into honors calc II, which he was entirely unprepared for (got a 2 on his AP calc), but the academic advisor convinced him to start in calc II when he really should have taken calc I. It was not a good situation.
