OK, my situation is this: I do really well in school and standardized tests, but I’ve done nothing AMAZING outside of school, I’m not close with my teachers, meaning impersonal recs, and my essays will be good, but not great. As I’ve been told repeatedly on these boards in the past, these things probably lock me out of HYPMS. With this in mind, I was wondering where would be a good place for me to apply.

I’m looking for a school that’s fairly well rounded, or at least strong in the natural sciences, engineering, and maybe economics (I’ve realized I honestly don’t know what I want to major in, but I am leaning towards math-based, but not math major). Small is better (~3-8k students), but I still want to be able to do research.

I’d like to think Rice is within reach, and UT’s a given, being a texas resident (although way, way bigger than I’d like). Where else do y’all suggest?
