We will be in NYC for a couple of brief days in January, and D would like to be able to do some shopping. I’m thinking 5th avenue. She lives in her American Eagle, Aeropostale, etc. Any suggestions on other shops she might enjoy?

My d loved poking around in the little boutiques down in the Village. There was a sort of flea market/craft fair down in that area as well. This was several years ago, so I’m not sure what’s there now.

Down by Soho around Broadway, a lot of stores for teens.

On 6th Ave, between 34&38th, there are a lot of accesory stores - headband, necklace, ring, bracelet - at whole sale price. Macy’s is at 34th. If you go further south, there are a lot of good Korean restaurants.

Century 21 if your D is into discount designer fashions. There is the large Forever 21 in Times Square. H&M is a good one for teens as is Urban Outfitters.

There is Zara on 5th and 42nd, H&M is just right around there.

You culd pretty much shop 'til you drop, except there is an 8% tax (I think it is 8).

I usually go shopping in NYC on the weekends.

I recommend going to SoHo, 34th Street, and/or Times Square. They are all great places to shop and are a nice way to explore NY. :)

Stores I tend to go to in these areas are Forever 21, Topshop (only in SoHo), H and M, Sephora, Macy’s, Aeropostale, and more!

Oh, and the tax is 8.875%

I thought NYC clothing is exempt from sales tax for clothes <$110?

Bloomingdales at 59th and lex. Even if you have one in a mall near you, this one is super sized. (So is the Saks on 5th at around 52).

What fun. Give me a call. I’ll meet you there. ;)

Soho and Nolita.

If you want to know you are in NYC and not at the mall, take her down to St. Mark’s Place in the East Village. You may or may not be a little shocked depending on how “cool” you were in your own college days. I don’t think Trash and Vaudeville has changed since the 70’s.

I second Century 21. Took my 11yo there in Feb and she loved it. I did not see the point of hitting all the national chains that we can go to any day of the year.

Soho, Tribeca, East Village, all great suggestions. I would keep away from the chain stores but don’t underestimate the delight in a walk-through of some of the main department stores that have branches elsewhere. Macy’s Herald Square is an amazing store in every way including the architecture. (The center escalators, still with their wooden slats, used to be bomb shelters.) Lord and Taylor, Bloomingdales, Bergdorfs, all amazing and totally unlike what you’ll find in the rest of the country. The clothes are not any different though, just a whole lot more available.

Which Century 21 is better - Downtown or Lincoln Square?

BTW - thanks for all the great suggestions!

I second NoLiTa. Lots of cool little shops. We also like Brooklyn Industries, which has several locations in Manhattan. Topshop is good, too. Your goal (in my opinion) is to get stuff you can’t get at home.

Jersey Garden Outlet Mall by Newark Airport. Has Off 5th, Neiman’s last call, all the traditional outlets…and no tax on clothes in NJ!

@starwarsfan,
No, to my knowledge there is no such exemption…

@nj2011mom,
Oh yes! Great idea!

Also…
@sylvan8798,
if you want to go to some outlets, I recommend Woodbury Common Premium Outlets in NY. It makes for a really fun shopping experience. I usually go only once a year or so with my mom and we always have a great time. It’s like a giant village of shops. (It’s not set up like a traditional mall in that each store has it’s own little building so you need to walk outside to get from store to store.)

There is no sales tax on clothing less than $110 in nyc. I live there. Here.

Fifth Avenue is definitely not where a teenager would probably like to go. But the names of the stores you all recommend are probably stuff that is everywhere in the country. Soho and Greenwich Village are the places where the most unusual stuff is. Soho can be very expensive though. But these are interesting places to shop in Manhattan. Williamsburg is very interesting and hip-- in Brooklyn. In fact, that is definitely where you should go. Take L train from Manhattan to Bedford or Lorimer.
