Places to Work Off-Campus but Walking Distance?

I got my financial aid very late, so I was not awarded work study. However, I think I will need money from working during the school year.

Does anyone have any suggestions for places off-campus but nearby that hire college students? I have three years experience working with young children and children with disabilities (ADHD/ADD, Down’s Syndrome and Autism), although I would prefer not to have to deal with that during college. =)

I am not bringing my car so it needs to be a distance to which I can walk or take public transportation.

A quick thought: not all on-campus paid jobs require you to have work study. While some offices do, it is still possible to get a job on campus without work study.

A helpful resource to find jobs on/near campus is the Career Center ([Homepage @ University Career Center and The President’s Promise](http://careercenter.umd.edu/)), particularly Careers4Terps ([Careers4Terps - Online Jobs/Internships Database @ University Career Center and The President’s Promise](http://www.careercenter.umd.edu/page.cfm?page_ID=12&section_ID=1)).

Yeah, there are plenty of on campus jobs. Being a lifeguard is sweet, really easy and pays well. Work at the front desk of the gym or at Tell-a-Terp, which is located in the basement of Annapolis hall, which might be far from freshman dorms. Being a CA (front desk person for a building) sucks though because the hours you have to work (late night, weekends, etc.) suck.

I don’t think you can be a CA as first semester freshman. Not that you’d want to be. It’s the only job I ever interviewed for and by the end of the interview was hoping not to get it.

I agree that you can find plenty of on-campus jobs without having work-study. The issue might be that majority will be taken, even this early in the summer. I’m talking the big places, like the Rec. Center. However, you can definitely still find a job at one of the smaller offices. The way to go is to get on list-serves that would have these opportunities listed as they arise (ex. Honors list-serve).

Off campus, I would recommend Book Holders - never worked there, but they seem like really nice employers. Maryland Book Exchange is across the street and could also be an option. You can also look into nearby places on Route 1. All of the above are definitely walking distance, though might be a long walk depending on where you live.

I will look into all of these. Thank you guys so much for you help!
