Places where you need a car?

In what major cities is it absolutely necessary for me to have a car?

LA- yes
Ny- I’m guessing no
Chicago-?
Philly-?

Chicago - no, the El will get you most anywhere

You don’t need a car in Philly. SEPTA will get you almost anywhere, and PhillyCarShare has very cheap car rentals for the occasional big shopping trip (it’s like $3.45 an hour).

I know a number of people here in LA without cars; it just means you have to plan trips around town with other people.

Thanks. I live in LA and can’t imagine myself without a car. I can probably get by, but I don’t want to inconvenience anyone. I would like a car, but in some places it is just impractical. (Columbia come to mind)

how about houston?

“how about houston?”

Yes yes YES. I’ve spent time in Houston, and everything is so spread out, a car is pretty much required. But it’s going to be a bear either way-- I assume you’re either talking about Baylor or UT-Houston, which are right next to each other in the Texas Medical Center. Parking is a nightmare there; be prepared to spend a lot just to take a shuttle in from a satellite lot.

You must have a car in Houston. I grew up there and it is essential.
