Placing out of 100 level classes.

Would it be possible for a business major to place out of ENGL 101 (and go directly to Proffesional Writing) and Calc 1 assuming 5’s on the AP Lang and AB Calc exams?

I have seen the AP chart, but I’ve heard of some people that are not able to place out despite being “qualified” by that standard.

Also, question about Calculus: How do the rigors of Calc 1 and Cal 2 compare?

Last question: Is it harder to get an A in scholars/honors courses?

Thank you.

With 5 on both, you can place out of engl101 and math140. Math 141 is the hardest calculus among 1,2,3. I think the average gap is below 2.8. You can only take professional writing until you complete 60 credits. For honor courses, I don’t think it’s difficult or any different than regular courses. You will be assigned more hw, and there may be some research project assigned. But you will get more access to professor

When you say Honors courses, do you mean H-Versions or Honors Seminars? I’ve only taken one H-Version, and I’m pretty sure it was harder than the regular version. However, for Honors seminars, they’re actually typically much easier to get an A in. The work levels for them vary, some I’ve had more work than a typical class, some I’ve had a lot less.

I have not heard of anyone not getting placement if they had the AP credit. Some people chose to retake a class, especially if it’s their major or they don’t feel comfortable with the subject material.

I believe you’re correct. There is some confusion on this since they previously gave advanced placement in freshman Eng. based on your SAT score. This is no longer the case.

OP, the only math class I’ve taken at Maryland was Calc III (H). It was a walk in the park. Only 23 in the class, compared to the very large non-H classes.
