Plagiarism--not political

@DocT,
Small request. If you are going to ask that a thread be shut down and you are going to name some of the politicians/spouses in question, please spell the president’s name correctly. And this is coming from the queen of typos and bad auto-corrects.

Suppposedly, the writer of Melania’s rough draft did not have the plagarism in the speech.

On a slightly different note, why are there 9 people on cnn’s panel covering the convention?

CNN should save some money and get rid of 4 of them.

The difference is that some people (regardless of what side of the aisle they sit) delegate the task, but they actually do have the intellectual capacity to do it themselves.

@dstark-
The writer of the rough draft didn’t have the plagarized components? Maybe Melania decided to make some final edits, and to research it, typed “presidential candidate spouse speech” in her url/search engine :slight_smile:

Can those who are calling for this to be shut down please stop being political to make it get shut down.

thank you.

@jym626, your guess is as good as mine as far as the speech goes.

However, I do have inside info on the KTVU story but I can’t share it because I would get in very big trouble. :slight_smile:

Discussing the plagiarism issue…no problem.

Making fun of, demeaning and making hateful comments toward someone who has different opinions/beliefs than ourselves is really not the right way to bridge the divide in our country. Our children might be listening…

Yes the speechwriter released his draft to the media that he submitted to the campaign. It was nothing like Melania’s speech.

I predict we’ll hear more about this in a slow point of the coverage tonight.

Maybe someone will start to talk about gun control and really get the thread shut down :wink:

I have sympathy for her. My impression is that she is a somewhat reluctant participant in this whole campaign. I think she would prefer to spend her time raising her son, attending to her jewelry and skin care businesses and putting her energy into her philanthropic work. She seemed more than happy to let his D Ivanka cover a lot of the early campaigning in her place.

I agree that nobody writes their own speeches. And since she really had little choice with regard to delivering the speech, she should have been given the necessary tools to succeed. Her delivery was terrific and it is unfortunate that the whole thing blew up like this.

She should be furious. I can’t fathom that any professional speech writer would pull a stunt like this and think it would go unnoticed. So why didn’t they hire a professional? Really makes no sense to me at all.

@HarvestMoon1 The news has reported that the speech given to her did not include the questionable sections . I’m sure that it will be addressed further .

Meaning that perhaps she inserted the language herself?

That was the speculation earlier @HarvestMoon1

A few general comments:

  1. Writing that all candidates, wives etc are using speech writers is not political because it is independent of politics. It is just a fact for all speeches to large television audiences. It will be the case for both conventions. It's irrelevant whether our current president's first name has 1, 2 or 10 r's. It doesn't change what I'm trying to say.
  2. As far as this discussion. A quick perusal of some of the comments particularly 191 - 193 are offensive to both candidates and highly political.
  3. I wonder how many here could give a speech to millions of people in a language different than their own native language, have it coherently delivered and grammatically correct? I don't think anybody here is so almighty that they should be the final arbiter of another's intelligence.

It explains why no one was publicly fired last night. The speech writer (it appears) is in the clear.

Yes but the New York Times reported that once the speech was received from the writers in June she worked with someone else to revise it. They did not specify who that someone else was.

@DocT --that’s three out of 215. I also would like that to stop, but I don’t think that those kinds of comments should shut down everyone else. I think there’s a lot to talk about that doesn’t have to be political, and I think that those who violate the rules shouldn’t get rewarded with shutting the thread down.

Does the “someone else” have really good arms?

DocT, your # 3 comment is really pretty offensive to people who come here from other countries. All she had to do was read a speech. Not write it. She’s been here for almost 20 years and claims to be fluent in English. Wholly apart from the plagiarism, let’s not call what she did a remarkable achievement simply because English wasn’t her first language. English wasn’t my mother’s first language either (she was from Berlin) but somehow she managed to complete all of college and law school within five years of her arrival here as a 20-year-old refugee in 1943.

Politics aside @DocT , she has been a paid spokesperson and a Goodwill ambassador for the American Red Cross, a co host on the View, and the Chairwoman for the American Heart Association, and sold products on QVC. She has had quite a bit of experience speaking in front of thousands of people according to her biography. So to expect her to give a clear , coherently delivered and grammatically correct speech is not unrealistic . I agree that it is unfair to question her intelligence .
