@rksugarland, I noticed your 2018 DS is in Plan II and Engineering. What sector of Engineering is he in and how manageable has his work load been thus far - balancing Plan II and Engineering classes? And will he likely graduate on time in 4 years or is it more like 5 years for this combination? Any idea the approximate number of your DS’s peers that double major vs. those that just do Plan II? I know that Plan II probably publishes some stats on this, but curious about specific impressions from students and families.
"The Status Check website shows me in a different college and major, not Plan II. What happened?
If you are admitted and Plan II is your only major, the Status Check will show that you are in the College of Liberal Arts, but it will list another major or “undeclared,” not Plan II Honors.
If you have been admitted to another college (such as Engineering), that is the only college and major listed for you until after the 12th class day of the fall semester."
Yes, my son is able to manage well at this point and maintaining his GPA above certain limit to get his 12k scholarship each year. He has many AP credits and should easily graduate in 4 years or less. He is also planning on majoring in Math and this may take one semester more.
Yes, someone in my school wasn’t an auto-admit and was accepted to LAH about two weeks ago. I’m not auto-admit either, and haven’t heard from Plan II or Dean’s yet. I was accepted to CNS though!
Hi. I’m trying to figure out whether any rejection notices have gone out yet. Has anyone who applied to Plan II or LAH received a rejection notice yet? I applied in mid-September, but I haven’t heard any news.
I wonder why they wait until the very last day to tell everyone they are rejected. Surely, those who have already been accepted aren’t required to commit before March 1. It doesn’t seem like capacity has anything to do with the decision to tell everyone they are rejected on the last day. Maybe I’m missing something.
@WaitingforTexas I don’t know why, and perhaps I am wrong, but if you search the forums, I think you’ll see there have been no rejections sent until March. Maybe I’m wrong and I missed it? (I hope I am).
Seems like Plan II should reject outright obviously unqualified applicants much earlier, but otherwise I can see why they wait. The 2015 stats (http://www.utexas.edu/cola/plan2/_files/pdf/stats/2015%20Freshmen%20Stats-1.pdf) show 451 offered admission to Plan II and only 169 accepted, that yield is unpredictable. Too many high-caliber kids that have too many options.
Just following up on the yield discussion above, DS and I attended a LAH info session and we were told that LAH extends about 400+ offers for an expected incoming class of 125+ and the reason for this is because of the expected yield. This isnt unique to either LAH/Plan II, the fact of the matter is that kids apply to more colleges than they have in the past. The only college I applied to as a high school senior was UT-Austin whereas the number of schools my son has applied approaches double digits. Platforms such as the Common App and even Apply Texas just make it easier to apply to so many schools. Colleges and honors programs like Plan II/LAH are aware of this so they have to extend more offers than available slots because of the yield.
@fatherof2boys Agree completely with the above, but I think Plan II could rapidly reject obviously “bad” applicants and use a large wait list to manage yeild.
Thanks for the insight. I’m guessing that, historically, a high percentage of those who have received admission news early have made their decisions before March 1.
Notably, BHP takes a different approach. BHP sends rejection letters on a rolling basis.
So here’s another question: Is anyone aware of applicants who received Plan II or LAH admission on or around March 1?
Looking back at last years thread, the next batch of snail mail acceptances will be received the week of January 25th. MyStatus wasn’t updated for 1-2 weeks after that. So, we could see the next wave mailed out next Thursday/Friday. Letters continued to be mailed out/received throughout February. I don’t remember seeing anyone post an Honors acceptance in March, only rejections. One other thing I did notice was that many that received LAH/Plan II in late January and February, also received their UT major acceptances shortly before, ie 1-2 weeks before.
My son received an acceptance in mail today from Plan II . We live in Austin. He goes to a private school and is graduating 2 years early. His school does not rank.He is 15 years old. So happy and relieved.
