Planning College Visits

New member here, I suspect I may be back a lot as I’ve got 3 teenage daughters, the oldest is an incoming HS senior the youngest heading into 8th grade.

With the incoming HS senior I feel like we are behind in planning for college. We had great intentions on visiting colleges over the summer, but here we are closing in on August and we’ve done nothing.

Partly I’m feeling like I don’t know how to handle the visits. I’ve read a fair number of posts/articles about it here and other places, but they all focus on the general experience of the school. I would want to try to find out more about how the specific program of study matches her interests. She ultimately wants to go to vet school, but there are many paths in undergrad from dedicated pre-vet programs to specialized equestrian studies programs to more general programs in biology.

How can I make out college visits more specific to what she wants to do?

The web is a great pace to start of course. All the specifics you mentioned can be explored without actual visits and you can email questions to admissions offices. From that research you can start building a list of schools to visit. Some schools offer tours of specific departments which you can sign up for in advance - usually on the school website. We have also contacted specific departments to arrange a visit on the day of our scheduled tour. At one school (Yale) the department arranged for an undergraduate math student to meet with us.
