Planning for quite the little adventure.

Hello parents

I just finished my freshman year of college and I really loved it. This summer I have been babysitting and hanging out with friends, but it just hasn’t been very fulfilling.

Next summer I would really love to just pack my bags and move to a distant land to work and live for the summer. I know it sounds crazy, but I’m pretty independent and would love the challenge and the adventure.

I go to school in Washington but live in Hawaii. I was thinking about heading to New Zealand or possibly Australia for next summer.

I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions as how to go about this. I have some money saved up, and as long as I could earn enough money while in whatever country I am in to cover the airfare, I should be good to go.

Any suggestions at all? I don’t want this to be a study abroad adventure because I will already be in Europe for all of my junior year studying abroad.

Any help is VERY VERY welcome…I just don’t know where to start!

Thanks! :)

There are some programs for working short term in New Zealand I believe. I would start with a google search. It shouldn’t be a problem to stay less than 3 months but tough to stay in New Zealand for a long time. Also remember that it will be winter in New Zealand for your summer break.

thanks for the suggestions  i was actually thinking about trying to be an au pair somewhere. has anyone had any experience with that? and i’m definitely not restricting myself to australia or new zealand…i’d be willing to go almost anywhere.

Most Au Pair positions are full-year jobs, but there are a few summer positions available. Where you’ll be able to go depends on how many languages you speak. When that 4-year-old doesn’t stop crying, you really want to be able to find out if she is just mad at someone or hurt herself and needs to see a doctor ASAP.

Remember our summer is their winter- you may want to check on how the schedules for schools/vacations work there in making plans.

Are you at all interested in organic farming? If so check out WWOOF.
