Planning on med school? What's your FICO?

Knowing something and really knowing something is different, isn’t it? I had always heard that medical schools (where most FA is loans, both Federal and Private) concern themselves with credit-worthiness. I just didn’t KNOW it.

It appears that many schools do something similar.

Now that I am fully aware , how does D get her credit rating at reasonable intervals (maybe twice a year?) so that she can monitor her progress so that this doesn’t jump up and bite her in the rear? The monthly charge places look like such a rip-off, don’t they? And I don’t think once a year is up-to-date enough. Can I just get a business or banking friend to run it for her from time to time? What’s the downside? (I know a credit inquiry itself can be a ding.)

I am sure there are quite a few students with NO credit rating(they have never borrowed money in their own name, or bought a car etc…), I expect no credit rating is better than a negative one-I wonder what the Georgetown policy is for having no credit rating at all? I know that I fall in that category as I do not even carry a credit card-just a debit card.

My school didn’t ask for that. I also only have institutional and federal loans, and I don’t think my credit rating affects those.

Heck, hg. I don’t think that matters much in some cases. Utility bills, leases, cell phone plans, equipment rental, lots of things are on those credit reports. Late pay the light bill? Ding. Leave without cleaning the oven and not pay the fee? Ding. Have somebody make a credit inquiry? Ding. Apply for a card and not get it? Ding. Have a card and not use it? Ding.
