Planning

I’m nearing the end of my freshman year. I’ve been doing a lot of research on college-related things such as SAT Subject Tests, AP Exams/Courses, and various other things.

Fortunately, I was able to stumble across these things now, instead of years down the road where I’d be wishing I had found out about it back in my freshman year.

Anyways, I’m wanting to know everything I can possibly do to stand out as one of the best applicants in the nation to the top universities.

My track record up until now [currently in freshman year]:

4.0 GPA [have never had lower than an A on my report cards]
*Early promotion [skipped 4th grade]
*Member of National Junior Honor Society in 8th grade
*25 Hours Community Service [doubt it’s on record, the NJHS did such a horrible job keeping track of everyone’s community service]
Established an online business SEE BELOW FOR MORE INFORMATION

Things I will be doing:
*Taking SAT Biology this coming June
*Applying to National Honor Society
*Attending JSA Summer School this summer and taking AP U.S. Gov. and Politics
*Joining basketball team sophomore year
*Participating in community service this summer and on
*Join school newspaper staff and apply to some journalism related honor society [think its called Quill & Scroll]

My Online Business:

Basically, I have been coding/programming since I was 10 years old. I know several web coding languages. For the past year, I have been coding an online browser based game in the language PHP. I just recently finished the project, and have began running it to generate some profit. It is still in beta testing, but it is growing quickly, has already generated profit through ads, and is expected to generate even more in the future as premium membership is released and traffic increases.

My 9th grade courses:

1st quarter

*American Government Honors
*English 1 Honors
*Eastern Western Heritage Honors [pre AP World History]
*Business Systems and Technologies

2nd Quarter

*Team Sports 2 [Physical Education req.]
*English 1 Honors
*Health [required grad requirement]
*Business Systems and Technologies

3rd Quarter

*Journalism 1
*Geometry Honors
*Advanced Weight Training [Physical Education req.]
*Biology Honors

4th Quarter

*Journalism 1
*Geometry Honors
*Semantics and Logic
*Biology Honors

Journalism 1 is considered an English elective.

The school is currently on a block schedule, but unfortunately is changing to a traditional schedule next year.

Some classes I unfortunately was placed in because of some mistakes made by previous middle school counselors :/

Next year’s schedule should look something like this:

*Algebra 2 Honors
*AP World History
*Spanish 1
*English 2 Honors
*Chemistry Honors
*Personal Fitness [requirement], then ???
*Journalism 2 [newspaper staff]

I’m not from a wealthy family, but I am willing to work for any extra options that will put me ahead. JSA summer school should give me an AP credit, and I will take the appropriate AP exam the following May.

My main focuses right now are to increase extra curriculars if needed, and to study for SAT Biology.

Questions:

1) How rigorous are AP courses?
2) Is SAT Biology hard?
3) How can I get ahead in classes? Do community colleges offer AP courses, or college courses?
4) What is the difference between AP courses/credits and college courses/credits?
5) Are there any major tests that I should be preparing for, or that I should be looking into?
6) If I decide to take a few classes at my local community college, what should I take? [meaning I’d rather not pick a useless class, so advise me! :P]

Any other comments and/or information is appreciated. Anything that I probably don’t know but I should know would also be nice to know

Oh, and if I posted this in the wrong section, I am sorry.

You’re doing fine. Just enjoy the time you have, and if you want any advice for college or college admissions, I can only say

find what you love. do lots of things. have fun. dip your hands in places until you find the thing that makes you glow

and pursue that. everything else will fall into place once you found it. it might be programming??? you’ve been doing it for awhile, so I’m assuming you enjoy it.

Indeed I do. I also have deep interest in law and politics. And thanks for the advice, sounds like quality.

This depends on your school, teacher, and specific class. I’m a sophomore now and the only AP course sophomores at my school are allowed to take is US history, which I am taking. We get about two/three hours of homework per night if you are reading at a good pace (we have to do a ton of notes and junk). It’s okay, but again, it totally depends on the school/teacher/course.

Sorry, I have no clue. If I were you I would wait to take the SATII in biology until after you have taken AP biology (if you plan to take that course).

Community colleges do not offer AP courses, but they do of course offer college courses. Some, but not a ton of really good colleges accept community course grades for credit, but taking the courses will help you out a lot and improve your transcript.

Hmm, good question. I think it is probably easier to get credit for an AP course (not sure). You can look on the website of any college you are interested and find the information.

I guess you could start preparing for the PSAT, although it’s not really necessary.

Take something you are interested in. Check the colleges that you are looking to attend (this may be hard because I doubt you know for sure where you want to go?), but check their policies. I am planning on taking some history, government, and politics courses at the U of M this summer because I am interested in those fields, and I think even if I don’t get the credit for them later, they will have given me a good experience and help my transcipt.
Don’t worry, this is an okay section to post in. Good luck with your planning and I hope all goes well for you! (Sorry I wasn’t able to answer your questions that well, but most of your questions really depend on other factors, so it is hard to give an accurate response!)

Cool. Well, look some compsci competitions up. There are several, but you have to look for them a bit more than science fair competition types. Programming…I believe it is NASA that has a HUGE programming competition, but I don’t know the details.

Get involved in politics. Take classes regarding it. Get involved with your local community’s politics, and work up from there.
