I go to a progressive/iconoclastic school that believes that its classes are of a higher level than standard AP curricula, and therefore doesn’t offer any, but many students in my school also take AP exams to round out our college applications/learn subjects that our school can’t offer (it’s eighty students per grade, so they don’t offer psychology, Italian, German, the government classes, etc.), and I’m interested in any advice people might have for good tests to take in my freshman year (which I’m currently in). I was thinking Psych, one of the governments, Music Theory (I’m in a class at school, though it’s terrible and I’ve been meaning to start teaching it to myself anyway–this would be a great motivator), World and/or European History (tenth grade history is American for everyone, this year is modern world, so I might as well take the world test this year), and maybe English Language and/or Literature. I’m wondering if this sounds reasonable, also if it would be advisable to take two histories (I’ve always had a natural aptitude for and enormous enjoyment of history–I remember historical facts without much effort and don’t find it boring, otherwise I wouldn’t be considering two; I’m wondering if the overlap between the two subjects might make it useful to study for them at the same time), among other things. Also, will colleges know that some of my scores come from ninth grade? If they do, would they prefer them to be from later years, think it’s good that the courses were completed early, or just care about the score? How hard are English language and literature? I’m aiming for fives on all my exams, but I have no problem leaving the English exams for later–my school has a fantastic English department, and the eleventh and twelfth grade electives are college level, so I probably wouldn’t even need to study if I took it in later years. Which AP exams are considered the most prestigious? I’m on track for Calculus in eleventh grade, so I could probably get my score on the test on my college applications, but I have a question about the Calculus tests (AB and BC): How much more material is covered by BC? I assumed it was a significant amount, but I’ve been getting the impression from these forums that it’s not–could I easily bridge the gap between the two tests via prep book, or possibly my calculus class, and if I take just BC and get a good score would I not need to take AB–would the BC score indicate an AB score? Or should I take both tests? I’d like to get as many tests out of the way this year because my work load is likely to increase significantly next year (I’ll be taking more classes), and, naturally my free time will decrease exponentially. Right now, given my school’s anti-homework nature (they give it, but they’re not inclined to, and it’s never as much as the other prep schools) and my class schedule (seven academics, which is perfectly normal for intelligent people at my school) I have a lot of free time, and I’d like to use it well and do a lot of APs this year. So any suggestions would be enormously appreciated, and I’m also open to exams other than the ones I’ve already mentioned (Economics? Art History? Environmental Science? Something else? I enjoy learning, so there aren’t many I wouldn’t like studying.).

structure your questions and then ask again. I stopped reading after three sentences!

Take whatever you are interested in and be sure to buy a study guide (and textbook if you like) to study for the exam.

specific questions? structure them and i will be happy to answer!

good luck!

AP tests play a negligible role in the college admissions process.

Woah - this is difficult to read. Structure. Structure. Structure…

okay. personally, i feel that taking 5-6 AP tests freshman year is ridiculous. i’m not trying to be mean or anything, but i really don’t think it’s realistic to expect yourself to get fives on all of them your first year of high school. it kind of seems like you’re underestimating the tests… no offense. then again, i could be completely wrong - i don’t know how hard your classes are.

If the wall of text this thread opens with is any indication, I would advise you to stay away from English Langauge/Literature =P

J/K, but seriously, try to break down your posts into paragraphs next time.
