Play a game with me…you’re bored to death of your Balinese living room furniture with beautiful tropical print. You love color and a modernly classic esthetic. You want new stuff. Everything you see is b.o.r.i.n.g. and drab. Overly designed, dead dull brown, beige, tan, olive green, icky and would probably look like crap in a few years time. You don’t care for leather, pleather, or a sectional, and are not opposed to a reclining loveseat and several (3 or maybe 4) individual chairs to complement - in fact that kind of interests you…here’s the game…where dear god do you shop?

Can I have your Balinese tropical print? How did I know you were in So Cal? I wish I knew where to shop - all we have left in Central Cal is Ashley’s. I need new stuff too and I hate everything I’ve seen for the last few years.

More info–do you like your furniture design wise? Any chance at recover in new fabric?
Hate your furniture? throwing it all out or saving pieces?
What colors do you want? Neutrals with color accent? total color commitment? What color? what’s the flooring? Wood, carpet?
What are the dimensions of your space? fireplace? TV? focal point? Get on Houzz.com and pinterest and look around.

I don’t anything about SoCal, but if I were you, I’d find a fabric shop and look at their upholstery section for inspiration. Buy a few swatches and drape them around your living room. You might even want to just reupholster your existing furniture.

My D1 had a $5 craig’s list coffee table and D2 convinced her to turn it into an upholstered bench. D1 bought fabric at JoAnn’s and didn’t buy her favorite since it wasn’t on sale but the end result was so fabulous that she couldn’t even remember what her favorite looked like! D2 is quasi-pro at this sort of thing so that helped.

You will have to do some research to find a furniture store that has a style you like, there are always soooo many of them.

Ok, hardwood floors (lightish with a red tinge), accent wall is raw wood slats (multiple shades of brown, all light to medium tone), second & third walls are turquoise (with a fantasy of repainting a grey-toned purple), 4th wall is a large window (that opens). High cathedral ceiling (stark white), small room, TV/stereo in this room along with 3 7’ tall bookcases). Colors I enjoy are greens, maroons, purples (not lavender, but a greyish muted purple).

If I were to keep the existing, I likely would want to paint it (or stain it) as I am really looking for something different. The current stuff is in amazingly great condition considering I’ve had it 13 years, it’s a love seat, 3 seat couch, large chair with arms, a large square coffee table (which my D designed and created a mosaic on, so it stays) and a smaller square side table. The wood is medium toned (having aged through the years from a light color). It would probably be an ordeal to paint/stain (it’s pretty intricate) but I could see it in yellow, or even white. If stained, I would go blue or green (bright green).

I have reviewed every design site, furniture maker, upholstery fabric store/site - even have swatches - but really think I would like a whole new look.

Lazy Boy is boring (blue or green are as wild as they get) and way over designed for me.
I have thought about World Market or Cost Plus, I was just hoping for something that might stand a test of time.

Keep the ideas coming. Nothing is off the table.

The World Market Center Las Vegas is a gigantic collection of furniture showrooms under one roof. They have a design center which is open to the public all year round, except when there is a trade show going on. Design assistance is available to make the shopping a bit less overwhelming.

Are you on Pinterest? I think that pinning things that appeal to you helps you zero in on your heart’s desire. Also, I like the Houzz site and it has decor in addition to remodeling/building/gardening ideas.
Finally, are you familiar with Annie Sloan chalk paint? I haven’t used it, but I’ve visited a shop that specializes in it and have seen a number of painted pieces, some with the wax and some without. Lots of possibilities for repurposing your tables.

Those dagnabbit Ikea coffee tables! Almost 2 decades old and are still going strong! Ugly, but functional. And they said ikea furniture does not last…

What a timely thread! The big kiddo asked me where she could get a “couch just like the one in the family room” for the “new” house she and her hubby just bought. This phrase actually translated, “Ancestors, I think you can update your furniture, and we can benefit from a freebie couch that we already know and love!” So I’m looking for a new couch, too!

Best recliner loveseat - Stressless (if you can afford one).

You might want to check the lazy boy website. They do have some mid century modern love seat recliners that can be upholstered in 600 different fabric choice, including turquoise or purple prints. They’ve come a long way.

If you are willing to forgo the reclining aspect, take a gander at the furnitureland south website. From the brands you may be able to tack down a local store, or if you trust pictures, have them ship.

Copenhagen has a very interesting purple sofa right now that you might like called the Aster sofa…they also have that brillant yellow/green and some other colors. Copenhagen tends toward contemporary and is only in Texas and AZ that I can tell…but you can look and see if you like those.

Both here in So Cal. (DWR has a great outlet in Palm Springs) And Palm Springs is just a great place to go and get modern inspiration. Lots and lots of fantastic little furniture stores downtown.

Seriously: Get a decorator. They have resources we mere mortals know nothing about, and their costs are not higher than doing it yourself because they get fantastic discounts. Ask all your friends if they have used a decorator and find one whose taste seems like yours.
