Please analyze my scores and give me some college advice!

Hi, I am a junior and took the ACT for the first time in December. Here are my scores:

Composite: 30
English: 35
Math: 27
Reading: 30
Science: 27
Writing: 8

How are these…? Let me tell you a little bit about my ACT test taking experience. During the math section, I went into another world because of all the geometry. I hate geometry lol. So i ended up just COMPLETELY guessing like 10 problems because I was running out of time. After that test, I was a bit disheartened to continue for another few hours or so. I felt like just getting up and claiming I was sick, thus canceling my scores. But I didn’t.

I want to study nursing in college. The schools I’m considering are NYU, Boston College, UVA, Loyola Chicago, and UIC (Illinois at Chicago). UIC has a tremendous nursing program and they have this guaranteed acceptance program for seniors to enter the nursing program right as incoming freshman instead of applying when college sophomores. UIC says that a 28 minimum on the ACT is required, so I fulfilled that and I’m happy.

Chances on the other schools, based solely on my ACT score? I am definitely taking it again, not sure if in February though. If you must know, my cumulative GPA is a 98.81 (weighted, we don’t have the 4.0 / 5.0 scale). This GPA does not include the first semester of my junior year. I am in all honors/AP classes with the exception of gym and psychology. I just calculated my current weighted semester GPA and it is a 4.055.

Thank you so much, sorry for all the writing!

if you’re seriously looking at boston college, you’ll probably want to raise your score. same with virginia.

they say math isnt that hard to improve in, just review that old geometry and do practice tests. but hey nice job! this was my first test too and you beat me :)

It looks like you might be having time problems more than anything else. You did great on English, which you had plenty of time for, but not so great on the time pressured sections. Do plenty of practice tests to work on your pacing and test again.

For your next ACT, aim for a 33 at minimum. But make sure not to get frustrated on the next exam. If you run out of time, shrug it off and get to the next section.

…That’s a solid score for first time takers or not!
But I suppose, with practice you can get your math and science up!
…but either way, good job! :D

Thanks to all! I think I am going to sign up for the February ACT. I am really determined to raise my score.
