Essays were about starting and organizing a huge school supplies drive for poor kids in the Philippines and also living with my grandmother (taking care of her over the years)

in my opinion, i’d say you have a decent shot but you’re still on the fence

SAT is just average compared to the average freshman admit and i’ve even seen 3.9-4.0’s turned away when i applied … and this was 4 years ago. however, you’re extra curriculars and community service experience give you a slight edge

in addition, i would mark “pacific islander” under race/ethnicity on your application just to be safe instead of “asian”

best of luck

@Andrizzle, thanks for the feedback. Yes, I made sure to specify my race by putting down Filipino haha. Hopefully, I have just enough to be accepted. Decisions come out in a few days, so we’ll see!

I agree. You’re definitely qualified. Writing is what pulled you down on the SAT, and I think most schools are more concerned with math and reading anyway, so you should be fine there if that had you worried at all.

Just because of your GPA, you have a pretty good chance! They might suspect something if you took an AP Chem class but didn’t put that down as an AP test.

That’s the only thing I would be careful of. At this point, only your personal statements would save you.

Thanks! Well, a lot of people I know choose to take the AP class, but not the AP exam, so I hope that’s what the admissions people will suspect! I guess time will only tell now…two days!

Of course there’s a lot of people who do that. But the UC’s don’t see it as “challenging yourself by taking a hard class even if you decide not to spend a lot of money on an arbitrary test”. They see it as “that person goofed off the whole year and their grades probably do not represent their knowledge in the subject”.

Either way, good luck. You have stats that make up for this minor thing which probably won’t be noticed with so many apps.

Unfortunately, my honest opinion is that you probably won’t get in, because they literally have 90,000 applicants, but it is a crapshoot. But you certainly have a reasonable chance.

I say this also because last year, my friend’s kid got a 740 on his math sat, and did not get in.

However, last year, my brother’s kid got into Cornell, for example, but got rejected at Syracuse.

@AceAites - I totally agree with you on that. I definitely did not goof off all year, but unfortunately, our teacher did not prepare us well for the AP Chem test. Only 2 people passed. Our teacher had his own set of priorities and our class was on the bottom of his list. With the 90,000 apps, I hope it won’t be a big deal!
@floridadad55 - Thanks for the feedback. The UC’s have a crazy amount of applicants this year and the admissions decisions seem almost random at times. On paper, I may stand a chance, but who knows what goes on in that admission process. A crapshoot it is…
