Please Chance me and make some commments or suggestions

I am a rising junior and want to apply HYPSM, UPenn, Brown (may be), Chicago, Northwestern, UMich, Washington U in St. Louis, Duke, and John Hopkins. Lean toward Medical school later, but undergrad not sure. Please chance me. Thank you.

Have not taken SAT 1 and ACT after entering high school, but did take them when I was in middle school for the talent search.

Will take SAT 1 December and hopefully get 2300+
Will take ACT March (required by State) hopefully at least 35
Will take SAT II Chemistry and Biology hopefully 800 for both

EC
Marching Band for all four years and drum major for the last two years
Volunteer for music events, relay for life, and other at least 100 hours
All State honor band since 9th grade and expect to be for four years
Community band and local symphony for 3 years

I know My EC are not strong, but I live in a small college town, do not have many opportunities. What else can I do to make my EC stronger?
What can make my applications stronger?

Thank you!!!

I think so far you have a great chance of getting into all the schools on your list except maybe HYPSM, which seems like a reach right now. However, your test scores are very strong considering you’re not even a junior yet. For ECs, I would say you could apply to volunteer at a local hospital (if there is one) for the summer, get some sort of paid employment (most colleges like that),etc. You seem very committed to all your ECs, which is great, but I think you probably need a few more activites that are perhaps less music-related.

Your lack of extracurrics is going to absolutely kill you. Look into winning some competitions this year. That would certainly boost your ECs. Also, it’s impossible to chance someone without their standardized test scores.

However, I am seriously impressed by your drive to take 3 community college courses a semester. Why aren’t you taking any math courses this year? Try looking into taking some higher level ones. They don’t necessarily have to be rooted in calculus.

Best of luck, and please chance me back!

Since your are a rising jr, you will take the PSAT in October. Take the SAT nearest to it so that your study time does double duty. No reason to wait until December.

Thank you guys.

All my dual enrollment courses are from a state university. My high school does not do any academic competition, but sports. When I was in middle school, I did participated Math Counts and Spelling Bee stuff, not in high school.

The local hospital does not give anybody a chance to do anything in the hospital if you are not 18 or older.

The employment is so tough for a teen in the town. Can you imagine you compete with college students for the scarce jobs?

I need EC but I do not know what else I can do.

There’s nothing stopping you from entering various competitions in science, math, and foreign languages. If you look it up, you will find that it is very easy to create a chapter or entry from your school.

“Since your are a rising jr, you will take the PSAT in October. Take the SAT nearest to it so that your study time does double duty. No reason to wait until December.”

I know but SAT 1 is only given twice a year in my town, so if I want to take it other than December or May, I have to go somewhere 1 hour away from home which could be a problem, when I am not used to get up early.

“There’s nothing stopping you from entering various competitions in science, math, and foreign languages. If you look it up, you will find that it is very easy to create a chapter or entry from your school.”

Keasyey Nights, give me some details.

It is not my duty to spoon-feed you information on academic competitions to enter. There are a great variety. It’s your responsibility to snoop around College Confidential and the Internet in general to find something that you are interested in.

I just found out that I can volunteer at a free clinic.
I will possibly have a chance to do some research with a professor at the state university.

For us, it is typically a 160 mile round trip to take an SAT. Buck up.

THat means one and one half hour each way. You have to be there 7:45am, so you have to get up at about 5:30 am, it will affect your performance.
