Please chance me for ED Boston University and share your and your children's stats (deferred, accepted, waitlisted, or rejected, and include ED1, 2, EA, or RD)

Hi, I’m a rising junior, and probably top 10%.
I created a similar thread, but it got deleted.

My intended major is Computer Science. I am applying ED for Boston University, and I live in the state. I may have to do loan.

Classes:
1 AP (junior year) or possibly 2 AP
Rest are honors
GPA: 3.87 (uw), 4.2 or 4.3 (w)
Test optional for SAT and ACT
My school offered computer science classes (AP), and I’m not sure why I didn’t take it.

Extracurricular (next to none):
Star scout
Tutoring online since start of summer (50+ hours)
Volunteer at library (5 hours)
No clubs, sports, awards, or instrument.
Plan on internship next year and probably research papers.

Chance me or match me to universities close by. If not, let me know how the program is doing (classes, teachers, campus, internship, debt, and work load)
Please reply.
I’m open to all criticism :I.

May consider other university, like Brandeis, Tufts, Northeastern, Simmons, and Boston College as well.

Please run the net price calculators for all of these colleges to see if they will be affordable for your family.

Boston University does not have EA…so no one will be able to give you info about that.

You have a full year to decide IF you actually want to apply ED to Boston University. Take the time to think about that. It should be your top choice bar none, and you should understand the costs and be prepared to accept an offer of admission…ED is supposed to be a binding acceptance.

Also, your thread was not deleted. It was closed.

Yes, I understand. Thank you for your help.
Do you think I have a chance for Boston University?

I can’t chance you but as a rising junior it seems like you have time to prep for and take an SAT or ACT, as well as AP CS.

Are you taking the PSAT NMSQT this fall?

I think it will be a lot easier to chance you after you have your junior year grades.

Just keep up the good work.

I will be taking the PSAT and SAT this fall. I don’t think I will score very high, but it will probably be a good score.

Okay, thank you.

Are you open behind the Boston area ??you don’t want loans.

Yes take the test and come back after first semester.

Good luck

Okay, thank you.

Also, by any chance, did you or anyone you know apply to Boston University? If so, what were your stats?

You can google the common data set for BU (or most any college) to get an idea of the stats.

Okay, thank you so much.

At my children’s school the only students to get in to BU over the last 4 years were every student who applied ED (2 per year), and no one else. We typically have 10-12 applicants per year from our school. Those accepted had UW GPAs in the 3.7-3.8 range and test scores in the range of 1300-1430/29-32. Those who were rejected included students with similar stats AND everyone who applied with a 4.0. No one who applied RD over the last 4 years was admitted. So…from our school…your stats would have a good chance if you applied ED and little to no chance if you apply RD. But…that’s just our data. I will say my child applied RD and then thought she withdrew her app after getting in ED elsewhere. Apparently she did not withdraw it because she received a decision letter…even though she never sent in first semester grades (since she thought she had withdrawn). She did not get in but she was offered Guaranteed Transfer, which is a program I was not previously aware of. In the GT program you start somewhere else for a year and then have a guaranteed transfer spot available as a sophomore at BU. My D’s stats were approx 3.7UW and 32 ACT with high course rigor.

Having said that, I agree with everyone else who said just keep of the good work and come back in a year and ask again. Also look at the NPC, especially if you are thinking of applying ED (anywhere).

Thank you so much. Also, if possible, could you tell me what the weighted GPA or amount of AP or IB classes these students took?

First of all you need to find out what you can afford to pay without taking on any debt. Then you need to get your parents to run the NPC for BU and see what it might cost you. If the difference is larger than the maximum subsidized federal loan amount, then you cannot afford it.

Do not apply ED to a university that you cannot afford.

Also, you apparently live in Massachusetts. U.Mass Amherst is very, very good for computer science. I have worked in high tech for my entire career. I have worked with a lot of graduates from U.Mass. The best of them are superb, and are very much on the same level as the best graduates that I have worked with from MIT and Stanford.

Okay, thank you. I’m currently in the process of running the NPC.
What do you think is a realistic income to apply to an university, like Boston University?
Amherst might be too far for me.

Then you might be Lowell, Boston or another close school, including community college. I don’t know your budget but BU is $400k

Have your family run the Net Price Calculator.

If your budget is $50k but BU is $90k, then you can’t afford it.

Nothing happens b4 you have a budget.

Getting into a college is not the most important thing. Paying for the college you get into is.

Have your folks fill this out.

Yes, we filled it out. Thanks for the advice.

And the amount it showed - can your family pay that without loans?

Loans have the potential to wreck your entire future.
