Please chance me for Ivies and other privates

I’m a white junior in a public school in Southern California.
I’m starting to look at where to apply and I’m wondering if I should apply to a number of Berkley equivalent schools and try to get into a bunch and have a choice. OR if I should apply to a lot of ivies and privates and hope to get into one? Schools I’m looking at: UCBerkley,
UCLA,
Pamona,
Harvey Mudd,
Stanford,
U of Chicago,
Penn,
Northwestern,
Harvard(legacy and know interviewers really well),
Princeton,
Yale,
Brown,
Dartmouth,
Cornell,
MIT
Thanks

Essay on my love of pottery and how it has changed from a skill to an art for me

Thank you all so much

You say you have a love of pottery, but this isn’t supported by the EC info you provide.

If you do have ECs and awards pertaining to pottery though, you can probably emphasize that (I mean seriously, how many people can say they enjoy pottery vs the traditional math/science/etc?) then you will stand out nicely. I like that you teach pottery at camp though.

Depending on the impact of your ECs such as the tutoring program you began, you could be a competitive applicant. Your scores are very solid as well.

Btw, is “Surf PE” surfing? :O

By the looks of it, your chances certainly aren’t bad. With Ivies, I really can’t say that they are “easy” by any means, but you have solid test scores, for one, and a wide showing of extra-curriculars. The only issue is that the latter can be a problem, as I have been discovering. It is better if your ECs can work together to show a strong direction, such as in what you mention. But once again, you’re doing well.

Thank you both.

Agent Twiddle
I really don’t have an EC to go towards pottery. I just bought my own wheel and make pots constantly. Will that hurt? and yes it is surfing.

So you would both recommend applying to the ivies and other privates and hoping to get into one rather than applying to a bunch of Berkley like schools?

You are a very solid candidate for most of the schools you have listed but what do you plan to major in? Main question: Have you visited any of these schools and attended any department info sessions? Since you have many options available to you, try to pick your list based on which schools meet your academic needs and give you the best vibe. It isn’t a lock that you will get into any of the Ivies (plus Stanford and MIT for that matter) and it is possible you will get into all of these. Personally, I think your school list is too A+ heavy, or you need to simply add some more A/A- schools to your list…

Yeah, I think you shouldn’t necessarily choose one of those approaches to develop your list, but rather combine the two. You should have a handful of Ivy and peer schools that will be reaches and hope to get into one or two, and then you should finish off your list with match type schools, including UCB, UCLA, and the likes. You may also need a safety or two, just in case of the worst possible scenario. You have a great resume, and I am positive you will get into an amazing school. Good luck!

Thank you. I’m planing on majoring in math.

I have visited all of the california schools on the list but none of the others. It will be tough for me to vist the others because they are all so far away. I have attended many local information nights. I was considering emailing some counselors at the other schools asking about their math science programs. would this be a good idea?

I will apply to UCLA and UCB. What would be some other schools at that level that I should be looking into?

Maybe UVA, Emory, Georgetown, JHU.

UCBerkley, - low match
UCLA, - low match
Pamona, - safety
Harvey Mudd, - match
Stanford, - reach
U of Chicago, - match
Penn, - low reach
Northwestern - high match
Harvard - reach
Princeton - reach
Yale - reach
Brown - high match
Dartmouth - high match
Cornell - high match
MIT - low reach

Of course, you’re competing with so many other applicants that it’s hard to determine how you’d stand with the Ivies. But still, I must say you’re definitely a VERY competitive and well-rounded student, so you’re going to get accepted to at least one of them. Are you sure you’re going to be applying to these many colleges though? Have you started thinking of what you want to do in college? You’re pretty much set / done with standardized tests and E/C’s. All you seriously have to worry about now is finishing strong with your GPA, which should be no problem for you.

chance me please?

all right thanks. I’ll look into those schools. Any others?

Where are you applying ED (if anywhere)?

I was thinking Stanford although its not ED it’s like restrictive early action. Does that help that much?
