What Are My Chances?

Hello!
I’m an upcoming senior, undecided major,interested in schools such NEU, Boston U, BC, Tufts. Feel free to chance me on a school that’s not mentioned.
I have no “top” school yet, partly due to my undecided major, so I don’t know what to ED, if I end up doing so.

Safety: UMass Amherst

Massachusetts, Asian, Male, attending a Public School.

SAT: 1830 (540 cr, 670 m, 620 w); will retake
SAT II: Math 2: 650; will retake
ACT: will take for the first time in September.

GPA: 4.31 unweighted; 3.72 weighted.
Rank: 24 out of 457

AP:
Fresh/Soph year: No AP’s, received 2 B’s in English each year.
Junior year: AP Calc BC (4, with AB subscore of 4 as well), AP Physics 1 (2), AP Psychology via dual enrollment.
Senior year: Calc 2 OR 3 via dual enrollment, AP Physics 2, AP Statistics, AP Chemistry

Extracurriculars:
Junior volunteer at a hospital. (summer of 2015)
Summer math tutoring at high school. (summer of 2015)
Leadership role to younger children in a Vietnamese Eucharistic Youth Society, every Sunday (2012-2015 as a leader, participated in it since 2006)
Altar serving at a local church every Sunday (2010-2015), also cleaned it every few months.
Member of Key Club
Member American Red Cross Club
Taught younger children tennis (somewhat of a leadership role?) Winter of 2013 and 2014.
Tennis team for four years: JV Freshman year, Varsity Sophmore + Junior year.

Tufts - High Reach
Northeastern - High Match

I recommend incorporating some safeties in the college list!
I think you have a shot at BU and NEU though, if you work on improving your test scores. :slight_smile:

I think you should retake the SAT. Make your aim a 2100. That will make you get a higher chance of getting accepted to Tufts. But for the rest, you’re all set

Tufts, NEU and BC are pretty big reaches for you. I do not understand why someone classed it as a match - it is a comparable school to BC in terms of selectivity.

BU and UMass are matches.

Tufts and BC are pretty big reaches. SAT score for Tufts I know would have to be minimum 2000+

The GPA’s are switched. My unweighted is a 3.72, and weight is a 4.31

^^^ Put together a good application with well written essays that present who you are, and get some good recommendations.

@NickFlynn So, you think my EC’s/GPA/AP’a are fine? and for recommendations would it be better for me to get it from a teacher or say the volunteer coordinator at my hospital?

^^^ There are some threads on here about tip for getting good recommendations, and how to approach people. You want someone who knows you well enough to say some SPECIFIC positive things about you…

The most important thing, if you want a shot at Tufts/BC/NEU, is to raise your SAT scores though…

Should I take a second subject test as well? I don’t know what to, because I struggle in physics.

Do recommendation letters have to reflect my intended major? Like, say would it be bad for my english teacher to write a rec for someone majoring in comp sci for example?

Yes, definitely. Some people just do better on one or the other of the tests. I know I said “SATs” above, but I had forgotten that you said above you were taking the ACT in the fall. Either test can do the job for you, if you score highly enough.

Some people might disagree with me, but I think that most of the value of recommendations come from the way they convey your personality and strong points - maybe your work ethic or your mature attitude or whatever it is with you…that kind of testament works for you no matter what the source. A good recommendation doesn’t necessarily have to relate to your intended major.

Off the top of my head, I don’t know what Tufts / BC / NEU require, so you have to go by that.
