ECs:
Production Stage Manager and Lighting Designer for school drama club (20+ hours a week, about 30 weeks a year) since freshman year (as well as senior representative on the Drama board).
Member of my school’s aerial team (a Cirque du Soleil dance team the involves tissu (fabric) climbing, hoop manipulation, and trapeze.
Two summers of lighting experience at a “summer concert series” venue.
Varsity Swimming from Freshman to Junior year.
Additional Club Swim team during sophomore year.
Member of an Ambassadors program in which I conduct tours around my school for incoming students/parents.

I’m applying to all the UCs except for Riverside and Merced.
All applications are Undeclared (or Undelcared in Life Sciences) with my alternate majors being in Theater. I plan to pursue a mixture of both in college.

In my UC Essay #1 I talk about drama in a figurative way, how there are no “masks” in drama (ironically, as drama is symbolized by masks) and how comfortable I feel there.

In UC Essay #2, I talk about my fascination with but reluctance to join aerial because I was afraid I would be harassed for being “feminine” or “gay” like I have been all my life. Ultimately, I joined it and its the most amazing thing I’ve ever done. I learned it is best to live for myself instead of in fear of what others will think or say.

I also applied to Stanford (REA), Emory University, Carnegie Mellon (BSA in Biological Sciences and Drama Design), USC (finishing app as I write this), and Cal Lutheran (Select Scholar application).

UCB and UCLA- Low reaches, due to your ACT score (better than SAT)
UCSD- High match
UCD, UCSB and UCI- match
UCSC- safety

Your GPA is solid for all the UC’s, but your ACT score and SAT II’s may not make you as competitive as many of the other applicants at the top-tier UC’s

Check out this link, if you want to see where the UC’s put your chances:

Thanks!
How much do you think the essays and ECs will factor in? I figure that my application will be pretty unique as I’m the only guy I know (outside of the few people on my team) who participates in aerial and my counselor said my aerial essay was one of the best she has ever read. =)

I think your aerial work is really cool! And I think you definitely have a shot at all the UC’s, including top-tier UCB and UCLA. I still don’t think you can say UCB and UCLA are “matches”, however, when you look at your entire application. Hopefully, I won’t be the only one responding to your post. Good luck!

You’ll probably get into all the UCs except for UCB/UCLA (which will be more around like a 40-50% of getting in… due to a relatively lower SAT/ACT scoring). Good luck though, and hope you get in and come to UCB!

do you have ELC… if you do then a def. in at all except UCSD (but high chance ) and of course the toughies UCLA and UCB gives you a better shot, but not too high hopes…

Sadly, I was about one person or two off of ELC. I still got a letter guaranteeing my admittance into the UC system, just not any specific school.

I’m really hoping that my essays hold a lot of weight, especially at Cal. Though I’m pretty sure I’ll end up going to San Diego anyway…
