I will apply ASAP… So what do you guys think?

Oh and I am out of state and will not be applying for financial aid

The only to be accepted is to apply. Is the 3.4 w or uw? How many APs, honors? What state.

If you are from NJ, I think it would be a reach. Anywhere else, it’s worth applying, and you probably have a good chance. It wouldn’t be a safety, though.

I actually am from NJ… why does that complicate things?

For out-of-state applicants, the vast majority come from NJ. By law in MD, there’s only a certain percentage of students that can be accepted from out of state. Generally, it’s tougher to get in from out of state. Although they don’t have set quotas, admissions does like to get a cross-section of OOS students. If a student from Wyoming had your exact stats, he would have a much better chance. Think of it as though you are competing with other NJ students applying to MD. Your gpa and act are ok, but not stellar. For that reason, IMO you shouldn’t consider it a safety for you, but you probably have a reasonable chance.

I agree with astro. UMD is also trying to get a way from that feel of if you are not from MD you are from NJ/NY. They are trying to increase their national level and to do so they are accepting kids that might have lower stats from other states. Do not read into it that they will take a 2.5 gpa from Tx over a 3.4 from NJ, because they won’t. They still want to keep the level of students up, but there are so many that apply from NJ that thy really can have the pick of the litter. Last yr there were several kids that didn’t even get fall 10 from NJ, everybody thought they were a shoe in.

Now all of that said, none of us sit on the admissions board and there might be something in your file that you have not said anything about which would give you a hook. You could also be from the number 1 hs in the nation that does not w and thus a 50% rank is actually good. Your community service group could have been awarded something from the gov. You could be on a state champion debate team.

FYI: Legacy is not a hook!

I suggest you look up the scatter gram for your school and that will tell you what the students looked like in the past.

If I recall last yr, kids would say that the class of 12 had about a 40% chance of acceptance, and last yr it was down to about 33%.

You can only be accepted if you apply. So as I said before, APPLY.

People need to remember with the economy the way it is there are alot more IS apps. If I recall correctly, UMD like many other state funded schools must take at least 70% IS, that does not mean that they cannot take more IS, they just cannot take less. They will always take across the nation and internationally, but they could take less. I believe UVA has taken alot of heat for taking 30% OOS over the past 2 yrs, and with each yr, they have lowered that %, and are getting closer to 20% OOS. Of course for UVA, they rank number 2 in the nation for public colleges so they can have the pick of the litter from OOS.
