Please Chance Me

I’m a rising senior, white male from Cleveland Ohio. I attend a private college prep school. I want to study finance/business.

Schools I plan on applying to:

NYU Stern (top choice)
University of Michigan
Northwestern University
UChicago
Case Western Reserve

GPA UW 3.61 (low, but my school is recognized as prestigious and extremely challenging).

ACT: 35

AP Calc AB - 4
AP Stats - 5
Honors Entrepreneurship
Honors Microeconomics

ECs

Founder and President of Finance / Investment Club (4 years)

Founder and President of Rock Band Club (4 years)

I’ve been playing piano and guitar since age3 and have been writing music since age 7. I am in a band and also play solo. I perform often (house of blues and other venues) and am under management. My band also won the Live Nation Rock off two years in a row. I have also opened up for many national acts.

Currently writing music for Nickelodeon

Composed a film score for a mid budget film

Started an online media marketing firm and created marketing plans for various musicians.

Started a web design firm.

Created a fundraising concert to help local hospitals and managed to raise $2,000.

Volunteer:
Play piano at hospitals

Supervise and care for special needs children.

Internships:

Large wealth management firm (1 summer)

Large private equity firm (1 summer)

Porsche dealer (1 summer)

Again, I know I have a low GPA, but I think my ECs set me a part somewhat? I’m a very talented musician and young business person. However, my ECs show that I actually put those talents and skills to work in the real world as opposed to just being a part of a club.

I realize I’m not Wharton material, however, the schools I posted all have really great finance programs!

I appreciate the help!

I would say you’re in for UMich and Stern, and honestly if you maybe took some classes online or sent in your first quarter grades with an ED to Wharton, you could have a shot. Your ECs are really focused and your ACT is great, you’re gonna be just fine with NYU. Good luck!

Oops definitely forgot about the rest of the colleges, UofC basically only looks at gpa so… yeah probably not, Northwestern is iffy but they’ll love how focused you are and if you do any sports this would be a huge plus. Not sure about Case Western but I think you’d get in

Great extracurriculars, very unique and different! Great ACT score too, but not many AP classes. Honestly if you get your gpa up a little, you have a good chance at NYU.
Chance me back please- http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1672761-chance-me-for-stanford-university.html</a></p>

Bump

You are in at Stern especially if you can afford the tuition without aid, accepted/wait listed at Michigan, rejected NW and UChi, and accepted at Case. If you are applying for Ross pre-admit at Michigan, you probably won’t get in. Those business internships look good in theory, but in reality it just shows you have connections. Chances are you are just filing paperwork or getting coffee. I would focus more on your musical talents.

Thanks. Also not sure how much legacy helps. Both of my parents went to Michigan. And final question

NYU has two early decision deadlines. Am I better off apply to first round and not showing first semester grades, or second round with my first semester grades?

Legacy would help a little bit. Your GPA and lack of course rigor may be your main weakness. Your excellent ACT score and EC may help to make up part of the deficit. What is your class rank? Considering double legacy, UMich would be a high match for you (as GPA 3.61 is really low for UMich).
Northwestern and UChicago would be reach as usual.

Other than your GPA, your pretty much good to got wherever you apply, but your GPA shakes things up a bit…But I also don’t know if a 3.61 at ur school is good/bad/okay?? Do you know ur class rank cuz that would be helpful.

NYU Stern (top choice)- 60%
University of Michigan- 80%
Northwestern University- 70%
UChicago- 30%
Case Western Reserve- 80%

chance me back pls: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1673885-chance-me-northwestern-duke-wustl-upenn-jhu-usc-ucla-berkeley-u-of-washington.html#latest</a></p>

@vballgurl UChicago does not mostly look at GPA. When I visited the school, the admissions counselor said that test scores and GPA only account for about 3 lines on a 20 page application. He said that the essays/recommendations are the bulk of the application and showcase a student’s personality and allow the admissions counselor to get to know the student.

IMO regardless of whether or not people on CC say you will get “rejected”, you should still apply because you never know what will happen. Most of the chancers are high school students who haven’t been accepted themselves yet. So don’t take their advice too seriously.

Ya. I attend a very challenging private college prep school that is one of the top in the state of Ohio. Even though my 3.61 is technically ‘weighted’, our school weighting is extremely low and colleges recognize that this is a challenging school.

Here’s what I’m thinking about…

Should I apply to NYU Stern ED? From what I hear, it increases my chances and if they feel they want to see my first semester grades, they can defer and wait until regular admission. Also, NYU asks for a backup school in case you are denied your first choice, so I would put Stern as top choice and Steinhardt Music Business as my second choice.

Realistically, the only other schools I would consider would be Northwestern and Wharton, but since I most likely wouldn’t get in and since I love NYU, I’m thinking ED is my top shot?

.

what are your sat’s? your ec looks good, it shows that you’re committed towards business, and your gpa puts you in the ballpark for umich and northwestern. chance me back please? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1674376-i-really-need-help-please.html</a></p>

I didn’t take the SAT. I took the ACT and got a 35 composite.

FYI. With GPA4.0, ACT35, 2x800 in SAT2 and 3x5 in AP, Parchment gave a 50% chance for Northwestern when the overall admission rate was 23%. Now that the admission rate is 12.9%, it should be less than 50% chance for OP.

Ya, I highly doubt Northwestern will accept. My top choice is NYU Stern. Should I apply early decision?

@youngandtired: Have you discussed chances with your school counselor? They should be able to provide data, based on previous admissions decisions, that will let you gauge how your GPA affects your odds. If a 3.61 UW GPA at your school is equivalent to a much higher GPA at other schools, your chances of acceptance at top schools might be better than you realize.

NYU Stern (top choice) — high/mid match
University of Michigan — high/mid match
Northwestern University — low reach or even really high match
UChicago — low reach
Case Western Reserve — match

your ACT score is dope and ur ECs are extremely unique…focus on writing good essays and you have a solid chance at these schools

Thanks. Just worried about my GPA and early decision because I won’t be able to show NYU my senior year grades

Not sure if it makes a difference, but at the private equity internships, I did a lot or research on potential buy companies and pitched many ideas to clients. Also, my private school doesn’t rank.
