Please define "unrestricted scholarship"

That’s the question – looked all over, and I can’t find a defintion of unrestricted scholarship - does that have to do with the donor or recipient or use of funds?

Thanks!

“unrestricted” simply means that the donor gave the money to the school in order for the school to award the money as it sees fit. there are no restrictions (age, race, gender, income, etc.).

people could answer your question better, however, if u provided more context. in other words, are u applying for an unrestricted scholarship or have u been awarded an unrestricted scholarship? either way, unrestricted means without restrictions. but your question is a little vague…

Thanks, calimami.

Kiddo should be receiving a school-sponsored National Merit Scholarship from her college, which they are calling unrestricted. Just hadn’t heard that term before, trying to learn the terminology (other than the 4-letter words that the 5-letter FAFSA causes…;-)

I thought an unrestricted scholarship meant there were no restrictions on how you spend it. i.e. it is not restricted to tuition expenses, or to room and board expenses.

@ swimcatsmom…I would truly love that to be the definition, because it would be great if she could use it on top of the other dedicated awards she’s received to help fund some of the other parts of school…just want to get the terminology right so I don’t sound like an idiot when I talk to Fin Aid!
