First child, still learning about all this college admissions stuff. We go to a small school in the deep south, and rarely do people apply to these summer internships, programs, etc. We are just realizing he needs, wants to do this. His counselor has not even mentioned any to him. What programs would you recommend at this late date to apply to. He is a rising senior, 35 act, 229 psat, interested in everything. He is planning on doing debate next year in school. Would a debate program look better on an application for college, than say, an intensive chinese language program. Cost is also an issue, isn’t it always! Thanks, in advance for any advice.

your child is exactly the type of student that can benefit most from these summer programs – and it will look good to colleges when he goes to apply. For most kids, summer programs don’t help with admissions (although the kids would like to think that they do) but in your case (small school, deep south, etc) it would look good.

There are many, many programs out there – take a look at brown or JSA.

peruse the post in this forum and check out all the programs – see what ones look interesting, are affordable to you and still take applications.

in DC, george washington and washington and lee have good summer programs.

Hm, Johns Hopkins might have something as well.

Also, there’s another CC thread going on debate pgms:
