Hi, I was going to skip a year of high school and try to get into Emory U. My grades in 9th grade were really bad. I had 2 Cs. My grades this year are much better (almost all As) and I have a 1410 on the SAT and am going to take it again next fall. I was also going to apply ED to Emory… Do I have a shot? I know skipping hurts me because I cant fully make up for my ninth grade grades but i dont know how much… or even if skipping will look good on my application.

I think you’d be better off making the most of your senior year, either graduating from your current school and taking a post graduate year at a prep school, if that is a possibility for you, or combining your sr year with some college or interesting extracurricular work, to demonstrate your maturity ambition and vision. Or, look into a Rotary Fellowship, where you can repeat your senior year in a high school abroad (after graduating from your HS early or not) at no cost (other than airfare), living in a host family and demonstrating your global view and bravery. We have a friend who chose this option and he has established fleuency in a foreign language, has had the MOST amazing experience and was accepted by UPenn before he left the country (deferred his enrollment for a year). You must apply for Rotary scholarships in the spring (now) for the following fall. Check out their website. I agree with the poster above: what is your hurry?
