Assignment: Can knowledge be a burden rather than a benefit?

The power of knowledge can bring many kinds of benefits to us. Knowledge allows us to better understand things and enlighten us with constructive ways to make life better. Knowledge also has the power to present disastrous events or occurrences that could have happened if we were oblivious to them. Evidence of this is seen in the invention of the vaccine and today’s effort to protect the environment from global warming.

The knowledge of viruses and diseases allowed scientists to synthesize a vaccine that would benefit humans by making them immune to those certain harmful viruses. In the 1700’s scientists created the first vaccine against the chicken pox virus by observing the behaviors of dead viruses and our immune system. They learned a revolutionary concept, that the immune system could recognize dead viruses and produce antibodies that would specifically attack those viruses if exposed to again. This knowledge of the relation between our immune system and viruses revolutionized medicine by allowing people combat diseases before they are inflicted with them. This breakthrough in medicine could only have been made with the discovery of the crucial and beneficial knowledge about viruses and our immune system.

Like the knowledge that saved many lives through vaccines, knowledge is also used today to curb global warming. Algore, a leading activist against global warming, has dedicated much of his time and effort into raising awareness of the causes of global warming and what we can do to prevent it. In his documentary about global warming called “An Inconvenient Truth” it is shown that the causes of global warming is from excess CO2 emissions into the atmosphere which creates a barrier and traps heat into our atmosphere. This crucial information has allowed us to be more conscious and careful with the use of CO2 emitting fuels that are used in many daily used technology such as cars. Because of the effort to raise awareness and spread the knowledge about global warming, many people today are now finding alternative fuels that don’t emit CO2 or simply reduces CO2 emissions. With that beneficial information, people are now aware of the dangers of global warming and are working towards curbing its effects.

In conclusion, knowledge has been proven to be beneficial in different ways. As evident in the discovery of vaccines and in the prevention of global warming, scientific knowledge was used as a positive driving force in order to improve the lives of people and the environment. When used properly, knowledge can accomplish many great feats.
