Does technology make our lives better in addition to making it faster?

Ever since our era was termed the “Digital Age” there was no turning back. Our lives are now strapped to the roller coaster of technology and we are rapidly flying past our daily endeavours owing to the convenience and speed the innovations render us with. Indeed technology poses to make our routines easier and less time consuming, but is that adding on to the quality of our lives? is the burning question. As technology becomes the predominantly reigning force in our lives, it impinges on the other facets of humanity. In a way, it has increased the speed of life and made us feel rushed as we insidiously transform into robots functioning without human impulse.

A great case to this point would be our ingeniously planned vacations thanks to travel agents who mark with a X each spot on our itineraries. Earlier these X’s were seen only on treasure maps that adventurers possessed while voyaging on journeys of great recreational and professional significance. Their journeys weren’t scaled in space and time, which allowed them the pleasures of thrill and spontaneity. While today the innovations enable us to accurately predict our travel time and our next eating-place, we lose the very element of human innovation in our trips. In essence, neither is there significance in the journey nor the destination because we are pushed through both with advent of timing and navigation that technology fetters us with.

Simultaneously, our devices have impacted in regressing our development as humans. We sit passively clawing at our smartphones, while the only movement in our body is that of the neurons in our brain. This is bringing us back to the times before the homo-erectus existed. Our hands freeze into claws perching upon the branch of civilisation that comes in form of our digital gadgets. The neurons that chirp about convolutedly create nothing but chaos in our idle brains. Not so surprisingly, it is not so far into the future when the modern human will look something like Squidward Tentacles, with a blob of muscle for a hideous head, and birdlike claws in replacement of the Spongebob character’s tentacles. Today, even though the universe is encapsulated in our devices and is tangible to us at the tip of our fingers, we are unable to reach out to it.

To conclude, our scientific innovations have capacitated us to fulfil all our quests about our world, yet stripped us of our identity of being human. We are transformed into robots, potentially even alien-like creatures because of being raced and halted by technology at its own whims. Instead of controlling technology, we allow it to govern us. Our inventions have enslaved us and add nothing but unprecedented complexities.

What score would I receive for this type of an essay?

I probably would give this essay an 8/9 because it wasn’t too long and it didn’t use very persuasive examples. Basically you had one personal example that expanded into two paragraphs. It was somewhat vague (you don’t use concrete examples but are somewhat abstract) and was personal which made it no so persuasive. Also you have some spelling errors (civilisation , convolutedly) which detracts a little from your paper. The conclusion was pretty good though. This is my first time grading an sat essay and I’m just in high school so the score might be off a little.

Prompt: Is there always another explanation or another point of view?

There is always another explanation and only looking at one point of view without acknowledging the others can lead to poor decisions. Several examples from literary works and history clearly demonstrate this fact.

In the novel pride and prejudice by Austen, Lizzy’s prejudice against Darcy is the result of Lizzy only looking from one viewpoint. Lizzy gets a bad impression of Darcy from the Netherfield ball where Darcy is very anti-social and acts very arrogant. Throughout the novel, Lizzy refuses to change her opinion on Darcy even when told by Jane that she might not have the full story. This leads to Lizzy falling into Wickham’s trap as he is somebody who was ruined by Darcy. In the end, Lizzy realizes that Wickham was acting bu it was too late to stop him from eloping with Lydia. Therefore, Lizzy’s refusal to acknowledge the opinion of others led to her allowing Lydia to be eloped (and then married) with Wickham.

As demonstrated by the Civil War, having radically opposite views can lead to war. The Union believed that slavery should be abolished and the South believed that slavery should be kept. These radically two views on slavery led the South to seceed from the North which was viewed as the union as treachery. The South viewed the seccesion as one of their rights so when the Union attacked, the South felt their rights were being violated. These two opposite views led to the civil war, which resulted in many deaths. Thus, failing to acknowledge the other sides explanantion can lead to bad actions such as war.

In the novel Anitgone by Sophocles, Creon’s failure to acknowledge Antigone’s reason for barying her brother Polyneices led to many suicides, Creon banned anyone from barying Polyneices because Polyneices rebelled against the state, believing the security of the state is more important than anything else. Antigone, however believed in moral law more than the state and therefore broke the law to do what she felt was necessary. Creon failed to see Antigone’s reasoning behind this and decided to have her baried alive. This led to Haimon (Creon’s son and Antigone’s fiance) to kill himself and Creon’s wife to follow. Therefore, being recalcitrant not only harmed Antigone but also hurt Creon greatly.

After a careful analysis of Pride and Prejudice, Antigone and the Civil War, one can see how important it is to see all sides to an issue before taking presumptious leaps. Failure to so this will lead to horrible consequences.
