<p>Assignment: When some people win, must others lose, or are there situation in which everyone wins?
In the world, there are so many problems and conflict we should solve. However, some people consider that the winner and the loser co-exist; nevertheless, some win-win situations and lose-lose situations really existed… When some certain things benefit one person or one group, it doesn’t mean that that thing will do harm to others. Some things, like technological innovations, environmental protection, basic infrastructural development, etc, will benefit all people; no losers exist.
We can easily find an example in the case of genetically modified (GM) food. Thirty years ago, scientists changed and combined some spices gene; in order to create some high quality crops. At the same time, GM crops produce high yields that are helping to increase the food production worldwide, which is extremely important to the developing countries. Moreover, the use of the Genetically Modified technology can help to reduce the use of pesticides and water which are important resources in developing countries. Most scientists would agree that GM foods have not directly caused any death or injury in the past thirty years. They are really safe and can benefit all people. The GM foods have made a great contribution towards to reducing world hunger and poverty. In this case, no people lose anything, instead, everyone wins. The suitable use of the advanced technology will benefit all people in the world.
Meanwhile, a similar case is the “New Deal” launched by President Roosevelt in the Great depression in the 1930s. When the financial crisis attacked America, Roosevelt made a reform program, “the New Deal”, to stop the financial crisis. At that time, the unemployment rate was really high; the public didn’t have money, Americans even lost hope. All of those cases ended because of “the New Deal”. Roosevelt spent no efforts to stimulate the economy by increasing the investment to the public services, creating the Works Progress Administration (WPA), choking the inflation. However, his program did no harm to anyone.
In short, situations in which everyone wins really exist.</p>
