Do Changes That Make Our Lives Easier Not Necessarily Make Them Better?

In modern society, progress is often reliant on change. These changes revolutionize our manner of thinking, acting, and going on about our lives. However, these changes that may serve to simplify our lives do not necessarily enhance them. They can remove personality and freedom and instead push conformity and uniformity. They can peel away individualism and detract from our lives. This can be seen through examples from history and from literature.

A major part of developing a society originates at the environment, specifically the cities and neighborhoods in which people live. The designing of these cities is known as “urban planning” and can allow the land to be used efficiently and the flow of life be accommodated for. In the 1980’s, a large movement began of people shifting from urban to rural residence, and with this came much urban planning. As a result, homes were designed that were cheap, took as little land as possible, and accommodated the average family. On the surface, this may seem efficient and appealing, but it was also lifeless and conforming. These houses came to known as “cookie-cutter” homes, these buildings lacked individuality and expression, removing a major part of happy homeownership. They were also not fair to large or unusual families who had to pay ridiculous fees to tailor these to their needs. All in all, while this project seemed helpful and easy, it was in fact detrimental to many households happiness.

Another example can be noted in George Orwell’s novel, “1984”, which follows a dystopian society. Built around a mysterious all –seeing ruler, this society presides itself on its system of language, known as “Allspeak”. Removing the difficulties of translation and confusing slang, Allspeak was thought to be the answer to communication barriers. However, as the main character so harshly discovered, mis form of language removes all uniqueness and individualism from language, such as expressive tool. This can be seen as a form of censorship that suppresses free thought and creativity, detracting from artistic endeavors.

In conclusion, innovations that seem to make life easier may not always better our lives; they may actually worsen them. However, changes can be a powerful tool for prosperity, only if wielded by right hands.
