Some school administrators and parents debate whether high school students should be given the option to travel off-campus for lunch. Those opposed to the idea claim that off-campus privileges increase the risk of accidents during the school day; students are rushing to get to and from lunch, and it also takes focus and energy away from academics. Others argue that students gradually earn the privilege of an off-campus lunch option, and therefore deserve the right to use it at their discretion. In your opinion, do you believe that high school students should be granted the privilege of an off-campus lunch option?

In your essay, take a position on this question. You may write about either one of the two points of view given, or you may present a different point of view on the question. Use specific reasons and examples to support your position

–start here
Freedom. It is essentially the core of what high school students want. Most of the time, rules implemented by parents or guardians keep them in check as far as what decisions they choose to make. However, it is during the high school years that students are able to establish the basis of their future. By giving them a taste of such freedom, it better prepares them for their post-high school careers. Allowing students to go off campus will not only teach students the necessity of time-management and wise decision making, but also benefit the school as well.

Allotting a certain amount of time for lunch force students to use time wisely. At lunchtime, students often times need a break in order to better prepare themselves for the second half of the day. This is when they can relax and rejuvenate themselves for the rest of the school day. Hence, this is the time where it may be needed to find a place to study to start homework, to socialize with friends, or to simply relax. The students will know that every lunch period cannot be used for pure pleasure – if a large test is in the afternoon, studying may in fact be the best option. Yet this is a decision the student must make. If the school did not allow off-campus lunchtime, this option may very well had been off the table to begin with. While some may argue and say that there wasn’t the possibility of studying due to off-campus temptations, this is not necessarily true. Negative consequences would result and thus teach the student a lesson for the next time. High school years are for learning experiences, and responsibility is something that is developed for most students.

When students can travel off-campus for lunch, it is the first step for autonomy. This idea gives them the first taste of college life where students are in fact free to go wherever they need or like. Students can utilize the many resources a community offers, such as the local library, and are not limited to on-campus resources. However, if students were forced to remain on campus for the lunch period, they couldn’t possibly learn to take the initiative to use such splendid resources. By giving students a small taste of college freedom, they will be better prepared for when they actually go to college. It can never hurt to give students a preview of what can potentially lie ahead in their futures; in fact, it may open the eyes of the students to new possibilities who were not planning on continuing their education to the next level.

While it may seem that students are the only ones reaping benefits from the option of off-campus lunch periods, the school can benefit from this arrangement as well. Contrary to the notion that students rushing in and out of campus may wreak havoc and mayhem, the school may actually be alleviated from some responsibilities. The overcrowded cafeterias would no longer be overflowing with rowdy students and lunch lines would not be so congested that teachers who may have just wanted to grab a quick lunch will have to wait for so long. The staff members do not have to work as hard during lunch periods or worrying that a fight in the cafeteria will break out. Also, schools may not have to spend as much money furnishing an elaborate place of resources, for the students when community ones are available. There are many unforeseen benefits for the school as well as the students.

Students can’t – and won’t – remain on leashes for forever. There has to be the time when they are allowed a small breath of freedom so that when they are off the lash, they will be more responsible and not as novel to the idea of autonomy. Maturity is not something that comes without time and practice, and to better prepare future generations that will uphold the values of society, freedom should be given to the students. So it is for the best that high schools take the first step and allow students to go off-campus for lunch periods.
