What motivates people to change?

“To change, or not to change. That is the question.” This is what I presumed Shakespeare really meant, or not. Nevertheless, people have been pondering on this question ever since the dawn of time. Many would think that if people were satisfied with their present, what incentive is there to change? But in this ever-changing world, where some might be on top one day and down to the bottom the next, people want to make sure that their future is secure and in accord with their present or better. Since people want to be satisfied with their future, the fear of the unknown future motivates people to change.

Just recently, Japanese major car manufacturer Toyota has surpassed its American counterpart General Motors in the number of global automobile sales. GM’s 76-year reign at the top in the automobile industry has ended due to the its lack of innovation and environmental consider, along with many other factors. GM spent too much money on the advertisements of its products that it has forgotten the fundamental reasons why people buy certain brands of cars–value, style, innovation and fuel efficiency. They have slacked off in our dog-eat-dog world. But this will not be the case much longer since GM has now a formidable fear of declining sales while Toyota rages onwards in the near-future. Because of its apprehension of its inauspicious future, GM has re-committed itself back to innovation and exploration of greener cars, and changed for the better.

However, change is not only limited to car sales but also more dire events. On the morning of February 1, 2003, the space shuttle Columbia re-entered the Earth’s atmosphere only to find its impending doom. The space shuttle broke up in the flames over Texas killing 7-crew members and destroying a multi-million dollar shuttle. How could this happen? Internal investigation found that the shuttle had had a gaping hole in one of its wings during launch. This hole expanded even more when the shutter entered the intense heat during re-entry. Consequently, all of the other shuttles were checked for these vulnerabilities, all of them being potential dangers. NASA implemented these changes out of the fear of an exact disaster happening again in the future.

People don’t change for their past, nor for their present but for their future. While the future might bring bliss, it can also bring gloom. Hence, it is exactly this unpredictable nature that empowers and motivates people to change the future for the better, by first changing themselves.
