Please Grade My Essay :)

Statement: Perhaps the most valuable result of all education is the ability to make yourself do the thing you have to do, when it ought to be done, whether your like it or not.
-Thomas H. Huxley

Topic: What is your view on the statement above?

The Essay:
In today’s meritocratic society, education is the key to success; it is the element, for the most part, which the “fittest” have attained and are using to survive. My parents have always said that, “education makes you a completely different person; you’re more mature, more responsible, and better fit to survive in the real world.’ This responsibility that education dumps on its “victim” allows the person to do an act he or she may not will to do regularly, as exemplified by Grey’s Anatomy and my old doctor, Dr. Patel.

Hundreds of thousands of surgeries take place in Seattle Grace Hospital, the setting for the hit TV show, Grey’s Anatomy. The surgeons are faced with a plethora of options on how to treat their patients, regardless of their personal feelings on the issue. This phenomenon has been evident throughout the seasons of the show. Yet, there is one particular episode that strikes out to me in particular. One of the patients at Seattle Grace, a pro-Nazi, was quite ill. Though she felt not compelled to save this man’s life, as he conflicted with their, and society’s, views, the surgeon in charge, Dr. Bailey, performed the necessary surgery on the patient. Her four years in medical school had taught her to shed her personal feelings on the patients and do what was necessary for them.

As far as I can remember, Dr. Patel (his first name escapes my mind) was in charge of my health and internal well-being. My mother told me a story about him once to me. Dr. Patel was getting ready for his son’s 5th birthday party. Just as he was leaving with the myriad of presents out the door, he got a text on his pager from the Chief of Medicine. Dr. Patel was to do the annual enemas at the county prison. Despite his spiteful feelings towards the issue, as well as the hatred he felt towards the date of the annual event, Dr. Patel, a dutiful and respectful doctor, knew what he had to do and undertook the onerous job, missing his son’s 5th birthday party.

Both Grey’s Anatomy and my close friend and caretaker Dr. Patel have exemplified the concept of education over one’s personal feelings. Not only has this concept been demonstrated to me on TV, but also in real life. Attaining an education, therefore, does have a negative effect on one’s life, at some point or another.

**I SINCERELY APPRECIATE ALL THOSE WHO GRADE MY ESSAY. THANK YOU IN ADVANCE! **

^ What does the essay have to do with education? It’s more about a doctor’s duties, not the doctor’s education.

The doctors received an education, and the essay talks about the choices they make thereafter.

I agree with dchow08, I would give you a 2/6 because your body paragraphs are not pertinent to the topic. I like your intro and conclusion paragraphs, but your essay should be about education. So maybe you need a different approach, like how everyone study really hard for the sat even though they are not willing to.

Too short, not on topic…I would try to pull examples from literature and history, rather then personal experiences and TV shows. It shows that you do more then watch TV. I think you are on the right track, but just need to stay on topic and have pertinent examples. Hope this helps! Btw, I would give it a 3/6.

Ok, thanks everyone!
