Assignment:is it better to be underrated by people than to be overrated??

Recent studies have showed that individuals or even nations feel assured when they are overestimated. While this is a commonly held belief it is not the case.History suggests that being underrated is an advantage and not at all a handicap.Wars prove that being underestimated by your enemies gives you the element of surprise that can make a great difference.

In 485 B.C. the persian empire attacked Greece.Sparta,a powerfull city-state,tried to stop the persian invasion in Thermopyles.Therefore,300 Spartans stood before almost a million of persian warriors trying to defend their country. The persians who at that time controlled a great part of the known world, underrated their enemy and considered them a minute obstacle that would be easily overcome. However, the Greeks fought fiercly for days and almost won the battle because they were underestimated by their opponents. Not only were they able to kill thousands of Persians but they also inspired many other greeks to fight against the intruders. The Spartans took advantage of their enemies’ arrogance and won a battle of great significanse because it misspell the false notion that the Persians were invincible.

Futhermore, modern history can also be a great testament to this thesis. In 1941,Germany which invaded Greece in order to make sure that they would not be attacked by the Allies from the Mediterranean while they attacked the Soviet Union.Simultaneously, they were gathering forces in Germany and preparing the expedition in the Soviet Union which according to their original plans would take place next autumn. Therefore, they allocated only a small fragment of their forces to the Greek war. However,Greece turned out to be an indomitable enemy that fought for more than 8 months.Hitler was then forced to procrastinate the invasion in Russia and assigned a much greater force in the Greek war and eventually won. This history example suggests that being underrated is of great significance and can be advantageous.

While these are only two examples they are indicative of the general truth;namely that being underestimated is bettter than being overestimated.History teaches us a lesson that we should not forget, and therefore always pay carefull attention to our opponents no matter how minute they may appear.
